What a great list! There's a lot of good people, quite a few of my favorites. I don't care about the positions, I couldn't care less, it’s very nice!

  • Emerson
    13 mar 12
If you like jazz, it's impossible to leave out Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong. Cribbio! :)

  • hjhhjij
    13 mar 12
And at this point, even Ellington ;)
For example, don't you like Hancock, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc.?

  • hjhhjij

If Ellington is there and up high too. I missed it, sorry.

Emerson, don't think I'm blaspheming, okay? But I purposely excluded all that part of Jazz, I ghettoized it to favor a bit the era of authors rather than that of the "soloists"... Because without Parker, Gillespie, Armstrong, Hawkins, Webster, Jazz would have stopped at the ragtime of Jerry Roll Morton, that much is certain...

Thank you for the compliment hjhhjij... I still need to hear the Mahavinshnu orchestra, although I might already have something... Weather Report is at 22... by the way, how do you deliberately choose a position when adding a new Artist?

  • hjhhjij
    14 mar 12
First you add it and then you move it with the arrows ;) Oh, there they are, I hadn't seen the Weather. With all those names, I think I might have missed one :D

no.....this will take a century...it's one of the reasons why poor Bruce, and so many others from position 100 onwards that I've added, are so far down...it's maddening like this...oh well!

Ah, Mahavishnu, listen to the first two, those are a must ;) Do you know Hancock as a solo artist?

  • Matteo Tarchi
    14 mar 12
Hancock, yes, I like him a lot, especially Maiden Voyage (what a record, it even inspired Marvin Gaye's What's Going On,) and Empyrean Isles... it's just that I thought if I included him in the ranking, I would have to include so many others that I’d end up sending the entire rock world to the cellar!

    This is true as well.

I forgot Oliver Nelson, Bud Powell, Albert Ayler, Wayne Shorter, Hancock, and too many others... I guess I'll have to make a ranking of jazz, come on, then maybe we can discuss it there... this ranking is way too inflated, it's unreadable! ;)

    Indeed, it’s huge :D

J&R is right... from now on, I will only accept suggestions on which artist to remove from the list instead of which one to add...

Pharoah Sanders, Grachan Monchur III, Art Blakey. Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark, Roy Harper. These come to mind for now =)

Nina Simone at 91st for someone who put Mingus in first place is inconceivable!!!..I can't look, I can't look...

Look Alexx, you’re not entirely wrong, but let me tell you something: from position 50 onwards, I can no longer take responsibility for the coherence of the placement... I pretty much inserted them as they came to mind, and moving them around in the ranking is quite a task, so I gave up on that. In any case, Nina Simone (whom I love very much) wouldn’t have been placed higher than the 45-50 range, since I gave more importance to the authors rather than the performers, (a completely subjective and debatable choice) no matter how fantastic... just like Nina Simone! Any advice on who to remove?

Many notable names, but the Slint above Weather Report and Caravan at the bottom don’t appeal to me.

  • Matteo Tarchi
    21 sep 12
@COX: If you help me move Caravan to around 65/70th place, I'll build you a monument...unfortunately, the last 50/60 entries were placed there without assigning a ranking...it's a monumental task to shift them!
