Memphis-born power-pop band formed in 1971, best known for the albums #1 Record (1972), Radio City (1974) and Third/Sister Lovers (recorded 1974, released 1978).

Formed in Memphis in 1971. Principal members included Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. The three early albums sold poorly on release but became highly influential on later bands such as R.E.M., Cheap Trick, The Replacements, Pixies, Wilco and Yo La Tengo. Chris Bell died in a car accident on December 27, 1978. Alex Chilton was born December 28, 1950.

Reviews praise Big Star's three seminal records (#1 Record, Radio City, Third/Sister Lovers) for their power-pop melodies, guitar clarity and melancholic lyricism. The band had little commercial success at the time but became hugely influential on alternative and indie rock. Chilton and Bell's songwriting partnership and subsequent breakup are central to the group's story.

For:Fans of 1970s power-pop, jangle guitar pop, and listeners interested in influential cult rock bands.

When you listen to Big Star, the soul suffers. It falls ill, but it falls ill with beauty.
