Nice ranking, almost nothing to say except for one thing; Amorphis were death metal, in the true sense of the word, only in their first two works. With the arrival of the new singer Pasi Koskinen in Elegy, they shifted towards a folk metal sound with progressive and gothic influences. Whether one appreciates this shift is another matter. I prefer them from Elegy onwards, even though their first two works are not to be despised.

But in fact Tales from the Thousand Lakes is one of my favorite albums, anyway I also included Sentenced so the same reasoning applies.

What I wanted to point out to you is that Amorphis have recorded eleven albums in their career, of which only two are distinctly Death, even though in Tales from the... you can already see clear signs of change. This categorization seems a bit restrictive to me; please accept my notes, having personally experienced that crucial period for metal music.

You're right, but I think with that album they left a mark on the genre, just like Cynic did with Focus.

Come on, I see that you understand: I repeat, I don’t pretend to teach anyone anything, everything I discuss comes from personal experience. That means that when I pass through your wonderful valley, I will stop to buy a nice wheel of fontina, leaving your name for the payment.

Since you know, I really like the musical parts of Opeth, but the growl vocals drive me crazy after 2 seconds. Is there anyone similar musically but with normal vocals?

Not an easy question. Sticking with Opeth, I recommend the album "Damnation," released in 2003, where all the vocals are clean, and the band clearly distances itself from Death-like sounds, incorporating highly refined acoustic elements. For the rest, I'll think about it and then let you know.

I know him, even the latest one is on the prog. But I'm also good with death guitar riffs, but I struggle with the vocals...

You could try something like Melodic Death Metal, such as At The Gates or Dark Tranquillity, even though the vocals, if not exactly extreme, lean towards growling.

      Sure.

Anyway, the term Death Metal itself requires a voice suitable for the genre, as the growl indeed is. You could try with Cynic and the album "Focus," which if I remember correctly has filtered vocals, yet still quite audible. And finally, check out "Symbolic" by Death which, regardless of the vocals, remains a masterpiece of technique and class.

For example, I don't mind the voice of the early anathema.

If you want to listen to an album by Anathema, start with "The Silent Enigma," released in 1995, a masterpiece of gothic metal. A particularly unique band came to my mind; I'm referring to Confessor, a group that recorded, if I'm not mistaken, a couple of albums for the Earache label. Their sound was Death-doom with the singer's crystalline voice; he practically sang in falsetto with dizzying pitch, so high it was unsettling.

      I know all the anathema.

I think of the Tiamat from Wildhoney, the Dark Millennium from Diana Read Peace, and then Control Denied, Chuck Schuldiner's last band with sounds similar to The Sound of Perseverance but less extreme. As for Confessor, they definitely deserve a review of their debut.

Great GIASSON. I hadn't thought of Tiamat, even though the sounds of Wildhoney are certainly not death metal. If you don't know them, try listening to Confessor, a really strange group in terms of vocals.

I know them, in fact I said that the review gap on the debut should be filled.

I first encountered them through a compilation that featured two or three of their songs; the impact of that high-pitched voice was at times embarrassing, yet incredibly original. It would be great to review their first album.

Look out for my next review; with my slow pacing, having just published one about ten days ago, it should be about Les Claypool's new project called Duo De Twang... then who knows...

@rolando303. You told me you know Anathema; if by any chance you don’t know them, I recommend Antimatter, with sounds similar to the latest works of the Cavanagh brothers' band. Now I bid you farewell, thank you for the beautiful page of great Music.

Hi Giasson; every now and then I enjoy checking out your Death Metal rankings; I noticed that Brutality is missing, a band from Florida with only three albums but one that drove me crazy. Their Death has a unique vibe, almost devoid of the typical fast-paced sections.

I'm not too familiar with American death metal, but I remember reading a review on this site a few years ago about the debut, if I’m not mistaken, from Brutality written by Tepes, who I think has penned about 80% of the death metal reviews here. He didn't speak very highly of it, so I didn't delve further. I'll see to remedy that.

Listen to the second album "When The Sky Turns Black" released in 1994; it features ten tracks of which I seem to recall three are purely instrumental, with one in particular incorporating acoustic elements that you wouldn't expect from such a powerful and "brutal" band. It also includes the Black Sabbath cover "Electric Funeral". I think you will like it. Hello to you and your Valley.

I was pleased to see that Brutality is climbing the charts!!!! For me, they are among the top five Death metal bands I appreciate the most, with the untouchable DEATH in the first place.

    Great ranking!
Death absolutely deserve the first place!

Forgive me, but Cannibal Corpse is still so far behind... I already know about your lukewarm feelings towards American bands, but come on, a little more up-to-date!!! Tomb of the Mutilated...

It's true that I've listened to them a little, but I don't like them. Much better Suffocation, or even better, Cryptopsy. Lately, though, I've been listening a lot to Hate Eternal.
