Se me ne vengono altri li aggiungo.

Not everyone will like the top 5... I'm telling you friendly!

Not bad, sure, but citing "Purpendicular" among the 2 albums to remember from the Purple... huh (haven't you ever heard of Machine Head or Burn, to name just two??!!)? The same goes for "Chinese Democracy" by Guns. I have no objections to the rest; it's subjective and I actually agree with many of the choices. Cheers!

I would have placed the positions among the top artists differently, but I don't pay too much attention to votes or rankings; I just need to know the appreciation for the artists, and here I see that we have very, very similar tastes. I naturally return the respect for the comment in the review ;)

@federock: I really like Steve Morse in that album. Among Zeppelin, Purple, and Sabbath, I prefer the bands of Page and Iommi. I love Chinese Democracy!!! I think the old Guns had already said everything in Appetite For Destruction. But these are debatable choices, I realize that =P

@Ghigno 92: at least the first position deserves immediate execution on this site XD

@prog_nait94: I think they're one of the few contemporary Italian bands that deserve attention, at least among the mainstream.

totally messed up ranking! Dream Theater and U2 ahead (and not by a little) of people like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Clapton is unacceptable.

I HAVE ALREADY specified that I AM NOT IN ORDER and that simply among all these I prefer a bit more the first 5 (and only the top 5 is in order). And if U2 moves me more than Led Zeppelin, I don’t think it can be contested; it must be a personal thing, right?

I think so too. Sooner or later, I’ll write a review about them.

It may be a personal matter, of course! But allow us to be astonished!

Yes, but you write to me "totally messed up ranking!" when I said at the beginning that they weren't in order, it doesn't really make much sense, does it? If we were to rank them, let's say that Led Zeppelin is in sixth place, tied with Sabbath, Stones, Yes, Crimson, and Deep Purple. On this, if you want, you can send me your previous comment, if you still think it's appropriate! =P

for heaven's sake, everyone has their own tastes, but just putting Neil Young and Nickelback on the same list feels to me like you’ve offended my mom.

Haha, and I’ll tell you that I prefer Nickelback!

So you put "Protest the Hero" in front of Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, Yes, and King Crimson? Seriously?

  • chinaski033
    11 sep 11
Francesco, do something otherwise I foresee a lot of controversies in this ranking. Anyway, my "totally messed up ranking" is due to U2 being in second place compared to the possible sixth place of Led. But as you say, de gustibus.

@Larrok: Right now I listen to them more and I like them more; I'm not making a historical argument here. If I were to make a historical argument, there would be no comparisons. Besides, we're talking about groups for which I have almost all their discography. The thing about the rankings on this site is that they force you to write grandiose headlines, like "the greatest artist of all time," rather than "my favorite groups," which would be much more fitting. If you could tell me how to assign a more personal title, I would appreciate it.

@Chinaski033: Go check out the links I posted in your list of the worst guitarists, have a good laugh, and then tell me if it’s worth updating that one too =P

I'm sorry, but you tell me that "these are the ones that, in my opinion, you can't do without at least one record at home." Considering that I'm missing albums by: Opeth, Protest the Hero, Yes, Alphataurus, Popol Vuh, Bruce Springsteen, Deep Purple, Tori Amos, The Doors, Zucchero, Mike Oldfield, Pain of Salvation, Pino Daniele, Mastodon, Pride & Glory, Nickelback, Locanda delle Fate, Liquid Tension Experiment, Steve Morse Band, Unexpected, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queensryche, and Extreme, should I consider myself a fool? Then excuse my frankness, but in the same ranking, you have Al Di Meola and Jaco Pastorius alongside Zucchero and Pino Daniele!!! I'm not saying they shouldn't be listened to if you like them, but having them together in the top 50 is just not right...

With all due respect, where is it written that anyone who doesn't have those albums I recommend is an idiot? My suggestions are meant to be listening proposals; moreover, they are useful for helping readers understand my musical tastes and how biased I may or may not be in reviewing an album. I understand that there are many arrogant people on this site who believe that the only music audible to a conscientious human being is the music they've listened to, but frankly, I don't consider myself among them...

I'm all for it if you don't listen to anything I listen to, because reading a review or ranking from you might enrich me, or vice versa.

  • ZannaB
    16 sep 11
Come on, my "idiot" was ironic; I just wanted to point out the huge number of artists that are missing from your essentials! And as for the first ones, even though I'm a bit embarrassed to say it, I have exactly 2 (I mean, TWO!) albums! Anyway, really, there’s Pino Daniele under Clapton; please put someone in between.... ;-)

  • Francesco 1987
    16 sep 11
And then I write for the umpteenth time that it's not a top 50, but DeBaser only makes rankings so they put numbers beside them. Furthermore, it doesn't allow for the freedom to write "the artists I prefer," but imposes the choice of grandiose titles like "the greatest artists of all time."

  • Francesco 1987
    16 sep 11
Oh okay, I thought your comment would be more "serious" =P sorry, but on this site, it’s trendy to go all out on the first person you meet... anyway, I reiterate that it’s not a real ranking.

  • Francesco 1987

Having more than two number 1 albums on this site is a crime, be careful making these confessions...

  • Mr. Money87
    16 sep 11
Very, very subjective ranking; I personally don't particularly like it. Let's say we're similar for some artists, but not at all for others. However, a huge plus for the Locanda!!!!

  • ZannaB
    16 sep 11
Yes, yes, I read that it’s not a true ranking, but among many, you chose these 50, so whether sooner or later, they’re your 50 favorites, right? ;-) Oh, and for the record, many bark here but there’s always a need to distinguish between those who bark ironically and those who are a pain in the ass. Unfortunately, there are always too many of the latter...

  • Francesco 1987
    16 sep 11
@ZannaB: Let's say they are my 50 favorites, but keep in mind that out of 500 albums from a few hundred people, I had to make some choices, so it's a bit of a work in progress. Additionally, for some of them, I really only like the albums I've marked, not the others. Well, next time I'll be more "polite" in my response ;-)

@Mr.Money87: Locanda are AMAZING! One of the most beautiful prog bands I've ever listened to, just like Alphataurus. Unfortunately, today's Italians know little about that splendid musical era, which I discovered by chance because I first became attached to English prog (through DT, paradoxically...) and then this summer I bought a ton of Italian albums from that period. Back then, Locanda released their album when it was too late, so they weren't given much consideration, but they have nothing to envy from foreign colleagues who are more renowned.

@Mr.Money87: I read your ranking and I like all the artists you like =P with varying degrees, of course. The only band I just can't stand are the Beatles. Let's say I fully agree with Scaruffi's review! The History of Rock Music. Beatles: biography, discography, reviews, links

Well, I am a huge fan of the Italian prog scene, discovered (like almost everything I listen to, to be honest) thanks to my uncle. Anyway, there were quite a few bands in Italy: PFM, Banco, Orme, Area, Balletto di Bronzo, Picchio dal Pozzo, Osanna, Biglietto per l'Inferno, Roverscio della Medaglia, and many others. It's a scene that has captivated me for a very long time and that I always enjoy listening to again.

Well, this summer I bought at least one album from all the bands you just mentioned. Except for Picchio dal pozzo, who I've never heard of. It's really high-quality stuff. And then if we compare them to the crap that they're peddling to us on the radio and TV today... it just makes you want to cry!

The woodpecker from the well, I recommend, are considered the "Italians of Canterbury," and for me, their self-titled album is one of the best of the '70s in Italy. I love that album!

Go ahead, if you saw the nonsense in my discography you would be amazed, do you think that's why I don't make the charts?!?! ;-)

@Zanna B: but you have to do it! Proudly carry your ideas forward!!! =P
..............Of course, if you need to include the latest from Rihanna and the live performance by Negramaro, I understand XD XD XD
