Liquid Tension Experiment

Musical Group

Liquid Tension Experiment is an instrumental progressive supergroup featuring John Petrucci (guitar), Mike Portnoy (drums), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Tony Levin (bass/Chapman Stick). Formed as a side project of Dream Theater members, the band released albums in 1998 and 1999, reunited for live dates in 2008, and returned with a third studio album in 2021. They are known for virtuosic compositions, extended improvisations and genre-mixing between prog, metal and fusion.

Members: John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, Tony Levin. Rudess later joined Dream Theater. Tony Levin is noted for work with King Crimson and as a session musician. The group is known for long improvisations (e.g. "Three Minute Warning") and for blending progressive metal, jazz-fusion and instrumental prog.

Liquid Tension Experiment is an instrumental progressive supergroup built around members of Dream Theater and veteran Tony Levin. Reviews praise extreme technical skill, long improvisations and genre-mixing (prog, metal, fusion). Some critics note moments of Dream Theater-like sound and occasional over-showiness. The group's three studio albums and live/improvisational material are repeatedly highlighted.

For:Fans of progressive rock/metal, instrumental virtuosity, and musicians who like technical improvisation.

We knew the project as a kind of Dream Theater without vocals, where virtuosity emerged with more vigor and imagination, with less metal and more fusion, and with more space for experimentation and improvisation.
