Well, the Simple Minds are missing, essential!

You know a lot. But what about Il Gruppo Pop? Or are they too deconstructed to be considered new wave?

  • Mike76
    26 oct 10
The ranking is a "work in progress." Certainly, the Pop Group deserves to be included, but I made this list deciding to include artists that I know well or for whom I at least own one record, and unfortunately, at the moment, the Bristol group is not among them (and I am not the only one with relevant gaps, alas).

Nothing in His discography from Sound?

  • Mike76
    26 oct 10
@voodoomiles: I must have had a phosphorus deficiency; I own both the first two albums by Sounds and particularly "From The Lions Mouth" reaches incredibly high musical peaks. I’ll remedy the oversight right away!

I imagine that the order of importance is non-hierarchical because Ubu at 16, Gang of Four at 21, Wire at 32, Talking Heads at 33, preceded just to give an example by Josef K, seems a bit questionable to me...

I would suggest the Falls, or is the forgetfulness intentional? And, above all, who the hell are the Siekiera?

  • Mike76
    20 jun 11
I Fall for sure. I know they're fundamental, the thing is that their discography is like a school of sardines swimming after you: you don't know which one to catch. They're still on my shopping list along with the Pop Group and a few bands from San Francisco. And maybe one day I'll dive into Simple Minds, about whom many people ask me and whom I've snubbed until now.

  • Mike76
    20 jun 11
I Siekiera are a Polish band from the mid-80s, simplifying to a sort of middle ground between Killing Joke and D.A.F.. Nothing essential but I think they're not bad at all, they have their own personality:

  • popoloitaliano
    21 jun 11
Sure, in the meantime, I had seen... for Simple Minds, I would approve of their presence if limited to Sons and Fascination, then they make the definitive album New Gold Dream and finally slip into stadium/FM pop. I don't find them that essential.

Damn, you really know your stuff. I'm pretty young and I've only recently gotten into the new wave, I even bought Simon Reynolds' Post-Punk book to learn more. One day I hope to write a list as valid as this one, I congratulate you once again :D

  • Felo
    18 oct 11
The only complaint is that Dead Can Dance is too low, but looking at the names listed, I would say that if it's not perfection, it certainly comes close.

  • Mike76
    18 oct 11
TheNoiselBreath: Reynolds' book is excellent for understanding the historical context and mindset of the time. The only flaw is that it briefly dismisses some important groups (and others it doesn't even mention), while dedicating many pages to artistically laughable groups like Frankie Goes To Hollywood. A book worth having nonetheless.

  • Mike76
    18 oct 11
Felo: the thing is that for this chart I limited myself to the period 77-85, so I'm only considering the first two albums by DCD (which are quite remarkable, by the way). Now that you mention it, though, maybe they deserved at least a handful of positions higher (I'll think about it).

  • Felo
    19 oct 11
Maybe even Television are a bit down for my tastes. But, whatever. For me, anyway, Dead Can Dance have little to do with New Wave, it's a bit generic, but whatever this too.

  • Wiserson
    19 oct 11
So much good stuff. New wave understood in a very broad sense, but the ranking is full of interesting bands and is very heterogeneous.

  • Taxirider
    19 oct 11
Interesting. However, putting the DAF before Joy Division is, for me, blasphemy. What do you think of Lowlife?

  • Mike76
    19 oct 11
Felo, Spleen and Ideal has very little to do with New Wave, but the self-titled debut is post-punk New Wave to the core, even though it already has that touch of mysticism and "exoticism" that distinguishes them. As for the TV, I acknowledge their importance, but they have never really "grabbed" me.

  • Mike76
    19 oct 11
Taxirider, I don't know the Lowlife, I listened to something on YouTube and they don't seem bad but they sound a bit like the Cocteau Twins with a male voice and anyway they are from a later period than the one I’m examining, so even if I wanted to, I couldn't include them.

  • Rocky Marciano
    19 oct 11
Nice ranking, but I really can't see the dafs in first place.

  • Taxirider
    21 oct 11
Naaaaa... trust me: the Lowlife did draw from the C. Twins, but not in a straightforward way. Moreover, their sound had noticeable similarities to The Sound. And let’s be honest: in the end, they were part of the great "new wave" family too. Anyway, aside from these considerations, I have to admit that you have good taste!

  • Mike76
    21 oct 11
Taxi, I admit that my impression is only superficial, but sooner or later I will definitely take a deeper listen to Lowlife, thanks for the heads up.

Dear Mike, so: the 1919 are an interesting bad copy of Killing Joke, The Eternal have done very little (only an EP) and Coitus Int. were really strong.

Sure! Please provide the text you would like me to translate.

  • Psychopathia
    21 aug 13
I would say you might like Danielle Dax and the Lemon Kittens. To provoke, a good choice would be an LP by Vagina Dentata Organ, a project close to Psychic TV. A nice thing would be to mention an album by Exene Cervenka (singer of X), but perhaps it's a bit far from the wave attitude that seems to be your focus.

    • Mike76
      21 aug 13
I don’t know DD and Lemon Kittens, so I’ll note them down. Vagina Dentata, as far as I know, seems like a power noise project similar to Whitehouse, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to include it. It’s true that there are Throbbing, but it felt natural after I included Clock DVA and Cab, and then something like 20 Jazz has episodes that can be defined as wave.
  • Psychopathia
    21 aug 13
wave understood as the darker and more depressive music of the '80s. but I see that there's a bit of everything. and then Exene has been solo since '90. maybe her band X is perfect.

    • Mike76
      21 aug 13
I roughly know what the X do and they might even appeal to me, but I've never explored it further. As for what Cervenka did as a solo artist, I don't have the faintest idea, thanks for the input.
  • erik

And the Televsion? They would fit in nicely.

  • Mike76
    12 jan 15
Once I had put them on, then I took them off. I can't frame them in the New Wave as I understand it (just like Patti Smith or Bowie) even though many have drawn inspiration from them.

  • erik
    12 jan 15
Well, I wouldn't even put Bowie in any way as a prophet, and in some way he adhered to the genre, but thinking like that we would need to include him in another 2-3 rankings. I don't know how you view new wave, but I would place Patti Smith and Television both chronologically, especially Television (Marquee Moon is from '77), and stylistically, even though it's difficult to group them all under a single genre.

    • Mike76
      12 jan 15
To simplify, let's say that in Television and Smith I don't perceive that "futuristic" element that I find throughout the rest of the (non) genre called New Wave.
  • maurinok60
    23 mar 15
I share my thoughts as an old aficionado of the subject: from a strictly musical standpoint (I emphasize), Patti Smith has nothing to do with new wave (rightly defined as a non-genre) as well as with punk (a contemporary genre that is stylistically easier to define). No matter how she was included in some compilations of the time or received assorted punk royal crowns journalistically, her music, I repeat strictly on a musical level, was pure and traditional rock ’n’ roll USA and nothing more. The fact that she started her "journey" from the same circuits as other more renowned US bands that are more strictly "new wave" is another matter. Similarly, from a strictly musical standpoint, the discussion about Television (who I believe can also be included in the star and stripes guitar rock tradition) is only slightly different, even though their approach (which owes a lot to West Coast bands like the Grateful Dead) had within it a "spleen" of undeniably greater modernity (and "Little Johnny Jewel," their first single, is perhaps their most new wave work of all). If we really want to be tedious historiographers, Television can be considered as a connecting link in the evolution of the species, a sort of (extraordinary nonetheless) transitional band.

Very nice. What do you think of Lowlife? Have you given them a listen? For me, "Rain," "Permanent Sleep," "Diminuendo," and "Godhead" are all great albums.
Congratulations again on the ranking, you've given me so many "listening recommendations." 👋☺️

Many are still missing, which will probably be added along the way... (right now I’m discovering the delightful Altered Images, for example). Thank you for the suggestions (beyond the Comsat ones that are already on the list, the others I only know by name or not even that).
  • Beautiful, but what about Tears for Fears and Talk Talk?

Let's say that the absence of several more pop and catchy bands is due to a sort of snobbery I had once, which I have set aside as I've grown older. It has been a gradual process of rehabilitation that could very well also involve Tears and Talk, of which I only know the most famous singles and that deserve a deeper exploration. After all, I have come to partly appreciate Spandau as well (even though I didn't include them).

Elitist XD. Don’t tell me anything, in the ‘80s I would have killed for Simon Le Bon and now I consider Rio the manifesto of those years! But Tears are something else. And also the late Mark with The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden wrote great things. Then everyone thinks what they want, for example in yours there are names unknown to me…

I had listened to them, but only very superficially many years ago and they didn't impress me. Considering that after twenty years I have reconsidered bands that I initially dismissed (for example The The), it's quite possible that I will like them now, tastes evolve. I will give it another try.

I assume they can't be too far from the tea-time companions Bunnymen and Wah! that I like.

Thank you, to be honest I still need to work on it but I don't have much time or motivation left. However, I do have the Wipers on my list.
