British new wave band formed in London; early period fronted by John Foxx (artful, experimental new wave) followed by Midge Ure (synth-driven, melodic era) responsible for the albums Vienna, Rage In Eden, Quartet and Lament.

John Foxx was the original frontman; he left the group in 1979. Midge Ure joined thereafter and fronted the band for Vienna (1980) and subsequent albums. Key long-term members include Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross.

DeBaser's reviews celebrate Ultravox's two main phases: the John Foxx era (raw, experimental new wave) and the Midge Ure era (synth-driven, melodic). Vienna, Ultravox! and Ha! Ha! Ha! are frequently singled out as landmarks. Live reunion shows (2009–2010) are reported as emotionally powerful. Compilation and boxed-set releases get mixed reception.

For:Fans of new wave, synthpop, post-punk and 1980s alternative music.

The day John Foxx left the group was declared a national day of mourning, although I’m not sure which nation it was, maybe just the one from my house to that of my best friend.

It was the most thrilling evening of my life, if we’re talking live, and I’m so stupid that I ran my credit card twice to buy T-shirts, sweatshirts, and even the laptop bag branded with the object of my passion.
