Close to the Edge (3), The gates of Delirium (8), Awaken (11), Ritual (16)
A Plague Of Lighthouse Keeper (4), Meurglys III (25)
Nine Feet Underground (5), Cunning Stunt (59)

100 suites! Goodness, what a job. I followed it with great interest.

You are avoiding (for the most part) the hundreds and hundreds of suites of modern prog, can you provide an interpretation for our listeners?

Yes, I added a few that are a bit more modern, but not too many. In fact, today’s suites feel too forced to me, as if they have to be made at all costs by sticking a bit of everything together. Beyond the exercise, though, some are good.

one of the most beautiful, unique, and personal rankings I've ever read. Mind you, there are still about ten names I don't recognize. The only "notes," if I may address Your Majesty: Shingetsu at 15th? Really? Uriah Heep? Not so much. Miles? I see him a bit like a fish out of water. Far East Family Band? After all, unworthy of this ranking and the other names; before reading them from you, I thought they only glorified Julian Cope. ;)

some very simple and modest proposals, artists well-known to you and perhaps already dismissed: Saneonimous (High Tide), In Held 'Twas In I (Procol Harum), Part Of The Dance (Matching Mole), Solar Musick Suite (Steve Hillage), Waves (Jade Warrior), April (Deep Purple), Moretto Da Brescia (Garybaldi), Animale Senza Respiro (Osanna)...

      waves is not a suite

It seems to me that according to the ranking, the concept of suite is quite broad, just look at "Spanish Key." They seem to be extended pieces in general. From my perspective, if Oldfield qualifies, then Jade Warrior can qualify as well.

I’m here reflecting whether Ommadawn, which I’ve heard a thousand times, can be considered a suite. Well, maybe yes. Or maybe no. Hm, I still need to think about it.

Damn Jargon. Of course it's beautiful. I can only tell you that in particular I really don't see Miles Davis fitting in at all. What does any piece by B.B. have to do with the suites? But for everything else, even for the more "free" insertions, it's obviously very beautiful.

Thank you for the compliments and also for the advice that I will certainly keep in mind. As for Miles Davis, I was indeed unsure and I think I will actually remove it. The same fate, as rightly pointed out by LaoTze, goes for the East Family. I welcome the suggestion of Hillage, although I perhaps prefer the lunar suite to the solar one, but I will see about Garybaldi and also Osanna. All of them are certainly insertable. Then I also remembered some other excellent ones that I will make sure to include.

As for Oni by the Japanese Shingetsu, I’m perfectly fine with position 15 because I consider it an exemplary piece, endowed with a dynamics and melodic strength that is decidedly rare, and its development makes me appreciate it all the more. It's true that it lasts "only" 9 minutes, but it truly has the essence of a suite. After all, if we look at the definition of a suite as: "a collection of instrumental pieces and dances, with different tempos, but the same key," well, maybe we should keep just a couple, and perhaps Ommadawn itself. :-))

Here are some recommendations: Clearlight Symphony Part One/Part Two, Bubu - "El Cortejo de un Día Amarillo", Carpe Diem - "Couleurs", The Muffins - "The Adventures Of Captain Boomerang", the two parts of the self-titled album by Alas, Far Corner - "Endangered" and Univers Zero - "La Faulx".

  • Hi, what do you think about A Change of Seasons by the beautiful Dream Theater? I think it fits. Bye.

I deliberately left out all the so-called progmetal. It could be the subject of a separate ranking. In any case, I prefer Octavarium and also other things from other bands to Change of Seasons. If I have time, I will prepare it. Thanks for the suggestion.
