The Profile

The Nice were an English progressive/psychedelic rock band formed in 1967. The lineup featured Keith Emerson (keyboards), Lee Jackson (bass, vocals), Brian Davison (drums), and, initially, Davy O’List (guitar). Their classically tinged rock and live intensity helped shape early prog before disbanding around 1970; they reunited in 2002.

Formed in 1967 in England after serving as P.P. Arnold’s backing band; members: Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson, Brian Davison, and Davy O’List (who left in 1968). Released The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack (1967, Immediate), Ars Longa Vita Brevis (1968), Nice (1969), Five Bridges (1970, live/orchestral), and Elegy (1971). Noted for rock reinterpretations of classical and jazz works, including Brubeck’s Blue Rondo à la Turk (as Rondo), Sibelius (Karelia Suite), and covers like Dylan’s She Belongs to Me. Celebrated as a live-oriented group. Emerson later formed Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The band reunited for concerts in 2002, documented on Vivacitas: Live at Glasgow 2002.

The reviews present The Nice as foundational to British progressive rock, highlighting their fusion of classical motifs, psychedelia, jazz, and blues. Key focus falls on The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack, Ars Longa Vita Brevis, and Nice, with praise for live prowess. Emerson’s virtuosity is central, while Jackson, Davison, and O’List receive due credit. The band’s influence and ELP connection are repeatedly underlined.
