I try to transfer this maxim of musical composition into the realm of writing. Does it make sense to say: before writing two words, learn to write one? Economy of sentences, economy of works: do not write unless you have a great reason to do so. These seem like such common-sense concepts that it's hard to take them apart. Yet: who among us, perhaps deluding ourselves, is not convinced that we have a great reason to write what we are writing?
