Modern English - Black Houses
#ilove4ad [A sonic journey through the catalogs that have ignited my imagination]
The music of Modern English is a manual of all the contaminations and evolutions of a certain type of new wave: sharp post-punk, martial synth-pop, and occasionally fine strokes of psychedelia. A flagship band of 4AD, they strongly characterized the early period of the label, with some of its members participating in that fantastic project called This Mortal Coil.
The artwork of Mesh & Lace, created by the graphic studio 23 Envelope, is masterful, placing a moving body at the center of attention, an idea of dynamics and evolution that is parallel and complementary to the band's musical conception, much like in Garlands by the Cocteau Twins.

The The - Song Without An Ending
#ilove4ad [A sonic journey through the catalogs that ignited my imagination]
Have you ever listened to an incredibly cohesive blend of new wave, psychedelia, soul, and jazz that leaves you breathless in awe? Yet for that eclectic and multifaceted genius, Matt Johnson, there's nothing more ordinary. Johnson has the ability to make ordinary, simple things decidedly complex; it's no coincidence that he was crowned a cult artist in the '80s. Anyone wanting to explore the various facets of creativity in new wave has a must-do and delightful passage through the grooves of Soul Mining. Not that the other works are any less worthy; in fact, here I've chosen to post a track from Burning Blue Soul to which I'm particularly attached.

Bite My Hip These four liked ska, dub, we know that, and they liked rock'n roll, glam, rockabilly, black-and-white horror iconography... They were brilliant because they hybridized all of this in the wave of post-punk experimentation, new wave, dark wave; dark wave they can be associated with in some cases, because most of the time they were doing something else. And damn, they were amazing when it came to playing even just their pure, beloved rock'n roll.
