I totally disagree with your analysis of Travis and Rupert... I wouldn’t talk about hatred for the former (and not even about goodness deep in his heart), but rather about frustration and asociality (Travis isn’t good, he’s a misfit, an animal within civilization: he takes women to a porn cinema, wants to vote without even knowing the ideas of who he’s voting for... he’s ignorant). Travis is so resigned that he doesn’t know how to hate (nor to love). And I wouldn’t talk about stupidity for the latter; the cool thing about “King of Comedy” is that until the end you don’t know if Rupert is a charlatan or someone who actually knows how to do something... after the kidnapping, you’re almost sure he’s just a megalomaniac out of his mind... and at the end, taaaac: you discover he truly has talent (in fact, the original title explains this better: the King of Comedy).
