Hello, interesting ranking for me since I’m always on the constant lookout for good bands; I don't know half of them including the top two, I’ll have music to listen to for the next ten years with just a few days posted on this site. By the way, I wanted to know, don’t you like Spock's Beard? I’d also think Echolyn would fit in well, but their first album is from 1991 so don't be so picky about a few years, what’s your opinion because I would think they’d be amazing?

They will arrive, Mild, they will arrive! As you have surely noticed, this first group includes only Scandinavian bands; Echolyn (wonderful at first) and Spock's (very good at the beginning) are American.

Anyway, Suffocating The Bloom and As The World are two monstrous albums, while The Light, Beware of Darkness, and "V" I don't really consider masterpieces, but I always listen to them very, very gladly.

The Light is a modest album; it doesn't blow me away either, but as a debut album, it's acceptable. I don't quite agree with you on V; I consider it a masterpiece that deserves a place among the 100 most beautiful prog albums of all time. The Great Nothing is an incredible piece, a twenty-seven-minute suite that can also be regarded as one of the greatest ever. I also recommend The Kindness of Strangers, a very nice album; I think it's clear that I'm a big fan, and perhaps my judgment is biased. By the way, in 2012, the last album by Echolyn was released—give it a listen because it's not bad at all. Sure, there are some lighter tracks, but there are also quite a few beautiful ones like Island.

The latest from Echolyn, yes, I've given it two incomplete and somewhat superficial listens, it hasn't excited me so far, it seems to follow a similar line (a bit better) to the last album... Anyway, it's not comparable to the return of Anglagard, it's a whole other thing.
    • mild
      26 oct 12
Damn, these Anglagard would be a perfect band if only they gave more importance to the vocal part. I haven’t listened to the last album seriously, especially since it’s all instrumental; I’ll definitely do it later, but right now I have other stuff to listen to, so I can’t judge it.
    • urlicht
      26 oct 12
Mild, you really didn’t say a damn thing, they would definitely be more enjoyable, but the beauty is right there: they are truly symphonic, they don’t make songs or suites, they create movements.

I also like Spock's Beard. The best for me are The Kindness of Strangers, Beware of Darkness, and Snow. I don’t understand why Urlicht doesn’t mention Snow.

Hi, Mauro, the albums I've included are the ones that struck me the most, then I tried to limit it to three recommendations for each group, otherwise it would turn into an encyclopedia! Anyway, I occasionally modify, add, and trim a bit, now I'll listen to Snow properly...

I need to listen to something by Brighteye Brison, who were recommended to me by a friend, hoping they are as good as Anekdoten and Beardfish. It's true that Sweden has no equal when it comes to the number of prog bands that stand at more than commendable levels.

    • urlicht
      27 oct 12
Well, they are very different from Anekdoten and Beardfish and in my opinion, they are a step lower. It's quite a melodic prog, with some harder riffs and sometimes complex harmonies à la Gentle Giant, but definitely worth recommending.

I know few names, but the Flower Kings make me hopeful..

    • urlicht
      30 oct 12
You can say anything about the Flower Kings. That they’ve made too many albums, and they all sound the same, that they can be a bit cold, all technique and little soul, that Roine’s voice might come across as unpleasant, that the bassist’s wife is a mussel who’s never been seen.... but they still remain, nonetheless, a band with serious chops, technically monstrous, that knows how to churn out a symphonic prog that’s a bit light, yet complex enough, highly enjoyable and entertaining.
    • proggen_ait94
      30 oct 12
But I care little about the technique in progressive:))
    • urlicht
      30 oct 12
A good bit of technique always does wonders for prog, otherwise how can you speak ill of it? ;)

Out of 51 names, I only really like (and a lot) the Cerberus Shoal... Not a bad result. And you don't like Farewell To Hightide?

    • urlicht
      30 oct 12
Including the Cerberus on this list is a bit forced in general, I know, let alone And Farewell To Hightide, which is a nice album but a bit too post-rock to end up here. The same goes for the Gybe, in fact, I'm uncertain whether to include them or not.

In my ranking, I had placed The Tangent very high and The Flower Kings low in the chart. However, there are three former members of The Flower Kings, yet I find them more appreciable. What do you think?

    • urlicht
      30 oct 12
YES, the Tangent have played a few flowers as well, but the deus ex machina is Andy Tillson of Parallel or 90 Degrees. Being a combo, they have changed lineup multiple times, always with Tillson at the helm. He is a fan of the Canterbury scene, which gives the band's music a certain jazz-infused and laid-back quality (not too much, though, unfortunately) that might make you prefer them to the Flowers, who are a bit more straightforward. They share a common flaw: they release new albums too often, and inspiration doesn’t always strike at the right moment.

Great work (in progress), but you could have included the Albums and Bands in their respective decades. Decemberists, Gy!be, and Kayo Dot (all wonderful bands) I wouldn't see here. In any case, great idea with this ranking/list, keep it up, I hope to find the Osiris as well.

It's that I wouldn't have had the decade 2010, then I liked the idea of the twenty years 1992-2012. Yes, the inclusion of the three groups you mentioned, but also of Cerberus Shoal, Black Mountain, and Mars Volta feels quite forced. However, I believe that the North American prog scene has the peculiarity of a strong tendency towards contamination that other scenes (like the English or Swedish) do not have, and so this led me to exaggerate quite a bit. Also, in these groups, compared to others from their original genres, I feel a strong "progressive attitude." The Osiris, of course you’ll find them, absolutely!!

This ranking from '92 to today works really well, even with these "forced" additions. It's good that you also provide a judgment, especially for the works of recent years; it is very useful to me. For example, I will look for Birds And Buildings, which seems like great stuff.

You're right, what an idiot, I grabbed the wrong shelf for the Muffins! Of course, Double Negative, very Canterbury in my opinion, better than Bandwidth, which is a nice little record too. I don’t have the latest release, well, two or three years ago, Palindrome, do you know anything about it?

To reach 100, I suggest the Sylvan with at least three remarkable albums: Encounters, Posthumous Silence, Sceneries, and RPWL with Stock and The Gentle Art of Music; anyway, a truly impressive list.

Ahahahahah, sorry but I find a ranking of 90s prog bands very strange! It seems a bit like ranking Baroque composers of the 20th century! XD Anyway, you did an amazing job, very well done!
