The Profile

Mr. Bungle is an American experimental rock/avant‑garde metal band formed in 1985 in Eureka, California by Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, and Trevor Dunn. They released three studio albums—Mr. Bungle (1991), Disco Volante (1995), and California (1999)—and became renowned for extreme genre‑blending and technical precision. They reunited in 2019.

Formed in Eureka, California (1985) by Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, and Trevor Dunn; signed to Warner Bros. Records; albums: Mr. Bungle (1991, produced by John Zorn), Disco Volante (1995), California (1999). Patton is also the singer of Faith No More. The band reunited in 2019 and has performed/recorded since.

Reviewers celebrate Mr. Bungle’s uncompromising “crossover” ethos: funk, jazz, metal, pop, and electronics colliding with precision. Disco Volante is hailed as their most kaleidoscopic and ingenious work, while the 1991 debut is deemed more accessible (and produced by John Zorn) yet still unhinged. California is praised for its colorful, Beach Boys/Zappa-tinged palette, with standouts like Retrovertigo, Pink Cigarette, and Ars Moriendi. Patton’s vocal elasticity and the band’s technical prowess dominate the praise, with one dissenting take.
