I read your ranking - after you read mine - and I have to say you're quite a technician... the only ones I would pull your ears for are the Kansas... prog them? And since you also included a good number of people who couldn't make any money (tonton macoute and others...) the T2 ("It'll work to the broomland") would have fit in nicely as well, truly great.
I also want to point out the Demon Fuzz, a great singer and they played well.

Very beautiful Afreaka! by Demon Fuzz. It was a potential review of mine.

Thank you for the technician, but I don’t feel like one, actually… The Kansas for me, and not just for me, are prog.

And thank you for the suggestions, I will definitely make sure to listen.

Great selection, I would shuffle the positions a bit... but why is there no Italian group?

Have you ever heard of Dando Shaft? I think if you give them a try, you'll find a little space for them!

I've put the Italian groups in a separate ranking; otherwise, it was too long. I've never even heard of Dando Shaft. What do you suggest?

Interesting, really. I don’t know some of them, but maybe it’s better this way: I know what to listen to in the coming days.

I repeat, beautiful beautiful but starless and bible black is a bit of an obsession for me, I'm really sorry not to see it. You'll tell me, well, I’ve added so many, one more or one less... but do me a favor and forgive them, come on.

But you did well to point it out to me. Anyway, I noticed that at least 2 groups are missing.

Great work and quite a few groups that I still don't know.

What a beautiful ranking! I agree with the entire list (of course!) and I particularly appreciated that you included Traffic, whom I adore. I don't know quite a few of the bands in the second half. Congratulations!

With a slight difference on Prog, I don't like E L & P... I discovered this summer while re-listening to one of their old records, maybe Trilogy but I'm not sure or Pictures... and it seemed like a big load of rubbish to me. Apart from the fact that they are great musicians individually.

Everything is great except for the Soft Machine, who don't really do prog specifically.

Great ranking/list, there's almost everything, sorry if I take the liberty to add something of mine, sticking to the "greats," like Kevin Ayers' Joy of a Toy, Colosseum's Valentyne Suite, Moody Blues' In Search of the Lost Chord, Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom, The Nice's Same, Procol Harum's Shine on Brightly, Hawkwind's In Search of Space, Arzachel, and then I’ll stop otherwise you'll send me packing...

      26 oct 13
Well, sure, all nice people that you mentioned, but they have nothing to do with the ranking. Kevin Ayers is not a band, Valentyne Suite is from '69 if I'm not mistaken, so not the '70s. The same goes for the Moody Blues, Procol Harum, and Arzachel. I see Hawkwind more in the space rock category.

And Rock Bottom has no genre, really, it doesn't have one. If you find it, you'll win 1,000,000, but I will never agree with you, so.

      26 oct 13
And with all the goodwill I can have for Robert Wyatt, until proven otherwise, he is not a band. Then RB is my favorite album or anyway one of my top favorites, but it has nothing to do with the ranking.
    • hjhhjij
      26 oct 13
Yes, apart from the fact that it's not a group obviously XD. However, RB cannot be categorized into a genre, you see. I challenge you to do it :)

      26 oct 13
But in fact, who cares about labels! And anyway, this ranking is as old as the hills and I only added Bachdenkel for some strange reason.
    • hjhhjij
      26 oct 13
I agree. Ah, I haven't updated mine in ages, and I don't even feel like doing it. The only reason I don't delete them is for some funny comments.

Well, it used to be a blast to give and receive advice and all sorts of nonsense. Now I couldn't care less about what these 4 idiots think about Deb, so....

      26 oct 13
I apologize Mr. Money87, I didn't notice that it was about the "70s", my usual unforgivable carelessness. Anyway, I don't think Hawkwind and Wyatt would clash, but well... Rock Bottom is outside of everything, and In Search of Space has prog elements for me, but that's a matter of opinion. Sorry again, bye.

I don't share some positions, and especially among these 47, I only know 16 (17 if we consider the Pink Floyd from the Atom Heart Mother and Meddle period).
Anyway, nice ranking. The big names are there. Just one note: why, among the best VDGG albums, didn't you include Godbluff, Still Life, and Vital, which are great records from the post-Pawn Hearts era? Just my curiosity.

The rankings are somewhat meaningless, this list is old... Anyway, let's talk about it: which ones do you disagree with? You're absolutely right about the VDGG albums.
    • tonysoprano
      23 aug 16
Even though I love the good gentle giant so much, I can't see him above the Soft Machine, or the Caravan under the Camel (well, this is primarily a matter of taste, since I prefer the Caravan).
    • tonysoprano
      23 aug 16
Because for me, the top three geniuses of progressive (without taking anything away from the others) are Peter Hammill, Robert Wyatt, and Robert Fripp.
      - the first represents the "philosophical"-existential face of progressive
      - the second the "sensitive" side
      - the third, on the other hand, is a chameleon, able to present himself in different guises without losing his nature.
    • Mr. Money87
      23 aug 16
On the Camels above the Caravan I can agree. The Giant is the group I feel most connected to among these alongside VDGG so....

Alright, damn it, the generator... amazing band

Thanks to good hj, I've become a die-hard fan of Van Der Graaf Generator, even though he's kind of Peter Hammill's nephew.

Yes, exactly! Anyway, I and hj are practically in agreement on almost everything!
