The Profile

Cressida were an English progressive rock band formed in 1968. They released two albums on Vertigo—Cressida (1970) and Asylum (1971)—blending melodic, symphonic arrangements with a gentle, melancholic tone. The group disbanded shortly after their second album.

Core members included Peter Jennings (keyboards), Angus Cullen (vocals), John Heyworth (guitar; later replaced by John Culley), Kevin McCarthy (bass), and Iain Clark (drums). Released on Vertigo (UK). Post-breakup: Iain Clark joined Uriah Heep; John Culley played with Black Widow.

Two DeBaser reviews revisit Cressida’s brief but luminous prog run on Vertigo: the soft, melodic 1970 debut and the more decisively progressive Asylum (1971). Reviewers praise the band’s dreamy, elegant touch, Hammond-and-guitar interplay, and composed symphonic writing. Standout mentions include Munich and the balance between romanticism and restraint. Context on the late-’60s/early-’70s scene and post-band careers rounds it out.
