Shirley Collins & The Albion Country Band ā€¢ Murder of Maria Marten (1971) UK @[IlConte] this is (perhaps) the masterpiece of this beautiful album. Murder Ballad is inspired by the famous case of the red barn murder, from which Tom Waits also took his "Murder in the Red Barn," indeed. This is a story I've had in my head since I was a child; I had a little book about all these stories of deaths/murders/ghosts from Great Britain, such joy!

In the midst of Brit Pop, they distanced themselves from Oasis and their ilk, flaunting a great taste for the typical sounds of late '60s psychedelic rock and, in certain aspects, a nice interest in Indian-inspired melodies.... You can feel that vibe, distortion, and wah-wah as if they were in '69/'70....
