THE AGE OF YARDBIRDS, or THE EPIC OF THE YARDBIRDS... (10)

So defined Mike Bongiorno in Sanremo, in 1966, where they presented this infamy alongside Lucio Dalla, in the "new" formation with two lead guitarists, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, the first having replaced Eric Clapton about a year earlier and the second having joined them after a brilliant start to his career as a highly sought-after session musician... Mike Bongiorno literally translated the band’s name to "backyard birds" and wanted to make the neatly dressed and stiff audience of the festival smile by extending the term to "Gallinacci," since they couldn’t say a word of Italian... He, may his soul rest in peace, was unaware that "Yardbird" was slang for "prisoner" but also for "foot soldier."
Oh well

7th: MALILINGUE
Once again, Ivan manages to get back up after the rather painful fall of Cicli e tricicli. Malelingue brings Ivan’s sound to a genuine and pleasant folk that is very easy to listen to. What immediately catches the eye is the Sanremo entry Maledette malelingue: a track with light and seemingly carefree tones but that hides a deep and important message, namely that the gossip spread by people is what causes a person to sink and ultimately locks them inside their own world. But Malelingue doesn't just feature the Sanremo piece: we also get to enjoy the jovial and never vulgar Poppe poppe poppe, the usual rock story of Il topo, the funny jab at the philosophy of "to become famous, you have to give it" in La bella Gina, the beautiful slow-paced story of a prostitute in Sempre dritto in mezzo al cuore sparerò, and the desire to always remain a child in Voglio un mondo minorenne. In short, this album is a small and final gem that offers a handful of beautiful songs, some truly moving (Avrò bisogno ancora di te, a dedication to an imaginary daughter), some that entertain with absurd language, and above all the usual extraordinary stories of absurd characters that populate the songs of the Abruzzese guitarist.

The gem: Maledette malelingue

🇨🇿 Third episode of "Mondo Československo!" with Ventolin, which my childhood memories associate with a syrup I used to take for my asthma. But here the guy offers "a la Kraftwerk" a nice electronic bundt cake adorned with mystification and Czech irony, something that the Germans lack.

The street where I grew up was pretty deadly; practically at every intersection, there's a tombstone, and at some intersections, even two or three. Anyway, that night a 127 sport flipped over (UH! AH! tagadà!!!) and the occupant gathered his things and hitchhiked home. We young, beardless kids got closer to the accident site and found some cassette tapes, including one with "weird" music Dire Straits - Down To The Waterline -- HQ Audio -- LYRICS
