Escaping from Criticism - Pere Borrell del Caso (1874)

Pere Borrell del Caso is a realist painter whose most famous work is undoubtedly “Huyendo de la crítica” (Escape from Criticism), currently part of the collection of the Bank of Spain in Madrid where it is preserved. The painting is a stunning example of illusionistic painting “trompe l’oeil.” Created in 1874, it depicts a boy in a clear act of rebellion, emphasized by his shirt, which is messily opened on one side, exposing a shoulder. With this painting, Borrell expresses that urgent need to return to see reality, provoking a deep fracture with optical illusion. A courageous leap into the void to escape the constraints of conformity. But it also suggests a paradox between existential and intimate space, as if to say escaping from oneself to find the way back. An observation towards ourselves, but also an observation of the other from oneself and towards us, in this magnificent game of illusion/reality. [source campeyblog.wordpress.com]
