"The three condemned men climbed onto their chairs together. The three necks were introduced simultaneously into the nooses.
Long live freedom! — shouted the two adults.
The little one, however, remained silent.
– Where is the Good God? Where is He? — someone asked behind me.
At a nod from the head of the camp, the three chairs were removed.
Absolute silence. The sun was setting on the horizon.
– Uncover yourselves! — shouted the head of the camp. His voice was hoarse.
As for us, we were crying.
– Cover yourselves!
Then the procession began. The two adults were no longer alive. Their tongues hung out, swollen, bluish. But the third rope was not still: even if slightly, the child was still alive…
For more than half an hour, he remained that way, struggling between life and death, agonizing before our eyes. And we had to look him squarely in the face. He was still alive when I passed in front of him. His tongue was still red, his eyes not yet extinguished.
Behind me, I heard the usual man ask:
– Where then is God?
And I felt a voice within me answering him:
Where is He? Here He is: He’s hanging there, at that gallows…".
