a few names: feelies, dead boys, dream syndicate, X, thin white rope, meat puppets, talking heads... but you see, when I said "dozens of bands" I meant to convey a concept according to which many rock groups, even lesser-known ones from that period, necessarily started from the lesson of New York’s new wave (R. Hell, Patti Smith, Ramones, Television) when they wanted to propose a bare, rough, and desperate rock... many hardcore bands (which should be held in high regard in this discussion, as hc was one of the most important currents of the new American rock of the 80s), at times when they slowed down a bit the pace or sought a certain connection with traditions or a retrieval of classicism, ended up proposing a rock that personally reminds me (in some of its traits) of Television or even the Patti Smith Group or Hell... it is clear that the proposal of Television remains INIMITABLE, because it is too peculiar, based on balances and combinations that seem so simple to the ear, but that in reality no one has managed to reproduce in all its invisible facets... Television has the gift of the classics: simplicity without banality... in short, my thesis is that the first new wave, that of NY (Television foremost), seems to have been very pervasive in what followed, in the USA as well as in the UK, Australia, and elsewhere, precisely because it refreshed rock decisively in the mid-70s... as for Strokes, Interpol, and the like, we are talking about revival, about servility towards a consolidated model... it is something quite different from the (hidden, underground, implicit) influence that the TV exerted on 80s rock... now it’s your turn: give me a few names of English wave bands inspired by Television. :-)

All these anecdotes about the stooges bore me to death... they are so clichéd... nothing compared to the ones about Lemmy: priceless!

I disagree with Mike's opinion: dozens of American wave bands from the late 70s/early 80s drew inspiration from Television. The Americans were ahead of everyone else when it came to rock, and the reason is the same as why pizza and pasta are better in Italian restaurants than in foreign ones. Let's reserve anti-Americanism for discussions about Bush. When it comes to rock, there’s no arguing: IU-ES-EI, IU-ES-EI!!! ;-D
