Mogwai Live @ Qube, Roma, 19.04.2006

A concise yet effective review that tells us two things: 1) the Mogwai put on a fantastic concert; 2) we can only hope that in the future, better bands don’t end up playing in this notorious Qube, which has all the makings of an unlivable dive of the fourth order with second-hand amplifiers and one of the most broken sound systems in the capital. :-)

Thank you so much for the compliments! @Festwka: I admit that I picked up the habit of mentioning ethnic dance names from Pierino La Peste (who, despite his many flaws, certainly has the merit of knowing the folklore of peoples around the world, even if I had to look up "rebetika" in the Encarta Encyclopedia!). Do you know of other groups from that period that, like the CVB, had a somewhat quirky folk style? I always think of a hilarious song by the Young Fresh Fellows called "Searchin' U.S.A.": if I remember correctly, there was also a big violin in there... Do you know of any others?

Old King Cole, Queen II is amazing! It's their most epic album, the one with the most baroque arrangements and the strangest melodies. A genius record! Get it! ;-)

Wonderful album, one of the best of the new wave and rock overall. Magnificent songs (how can you not love Venus?), composed and performed by four musicians in a state of grace. Verlaine's guitar has set a standard. I don’t understand the connections that many make with the noise-rock that preceded them (Velvet Underground) and that would follow them (Sonic Youth). Anyway, an extremely influential band that still feels incredibly fresh today.

Exactly: JL have little to do with DLJ, and in any case, the Lizard had the gift of synthesis; for example, in "Goat" there isn't a single note too many! Unfortunately, DLJ haven't always possessed this gift, as I wrote in the review...
MC5 Kick Out The Jams

Devastating album, extremely energetic and vital even today. The "old" rock'n'roll interpretation by the MC5 has ended up influencing both the hard'n'heavy scene and the garage-punk scene. A band that is therefore "cross-genre." I still prefer the Stooges, because I find them deeper and also more innovative. Anyway, "Kick out the jams" is undoubtedly among the candidates for the best live album of all time.

I should listen to the self-titled album again as well... By the way, speaking of recoveries, I have some other big surprises in store... ;-D
