...a Leonard Cohen or a Tom Waits....

I still have to listen to them. I'll take care of it.

I'm just discovering the more famous singer-songwriters now. I need time to catch up with them.

...the two characters I recommended to you are heavyweights on the level of Van Morrison...

I know, especially Cohen. Tom Waits is a bit tricky at first, due to his voice, but that's exactly what makes him remarkable.

...not just for the voice...in the "true" masterpieces (Frank Wild Years, Rain Dogs, and Swordfishtrombones) the music and arrangements are quite skewed at first glance...in reality, it's material that oozes deep humanity...suffering, pain...it's stuff for the desperate...for stray dogs...but if it grabs you, it sticks inside you...I know something about that...

I'm glad to see my beloved Morrison so high up. Great ranking, all the heavyweights are there or almost all of them, and I agree with the top 3. Try listening to Nick Cave as well if you're not already familiar with him.

I know Nick Cave, but I still have to listen to his "masterpieces."

There are still many left, it’s a world I have yet to explore in its entirety.

Based on my tastes: 1. Neil Young 2. Bob Dylan 3. Tom Waits among yours, and then I add a Mitchell that always gives a touch of class.

I'm not ranking her for now because I still have to listen to her albums.

Beautiful! And it’s lovely that it "expands" as you continue your exploration of the singer-songwriter world. However, I wouldn't underestimate the Italian scene, which doesn't stop at the immense Faber... :)

    • Zimmy

      that certainly doesn't stop

Hey guys, at 18 it's normal that some things you still have to listen to. In fact, take your time because otherwise you won't enjoy them.

Thank you. I know that the Italian scene is vast, but I prefer to focus on those that are more famous on an "international" level first.

It wasn't a criticism, absolutely... more an invitation to delve deeper. Right, what hj says: these are artists to be savored slowly. Just think, I "miss" many foreign names instead, the most important of which - alas, I confess - is certainly Waits. A gap that I will fill as soon as possible because I'm tired of hearing him praised without being able to join in the celebrations :)

I placed the Italians in a separate ranking so as not to undermine them...

Tom Waits is very unique; I was skeptical myself the first time I listened to Swordfishtrombones, but then I gradually started to love it.

I have set some personal parameters to facilitate my evaluation of certain artists (these are obviously personal rankings).

In my opinion, Faber surpasses them all, especially when it comes to the lyrics. Maybe he's on par with Leonard Cohen... maybe.

It's a matter of taste: I definitely prefer it to Bob Dylan, but I find it hard to define it as better compared to sacred monsters like Tim Buckley and Van Morrison. Also, I only know the two albums mentioned of Faber.
    • tonysoprano
      7 jun 16
that were enough for me to understand its greatness
    • tonysoprano

Well, there’s quite a nice "war" over the lyrics among 4 songwriters (Tim Buckley, Faber, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen).
    • tonysoprano
      7 jun 16
Then there are Nick Cave (simple yet complex) and Tom Waits (surreal).

To avoid undermining Italian songwriting, I created a separate ranking in "canzone italiana."

What do you think of my ranking?
    • SandroGiacobbe
      11 jul 16
Look, I'm much more attached to the Italian one as you might have understood... I respect your tastes, but I can't see Leonard Cohen in eighth place, while Tom Waits in second fits much better. Of course, it's complicated to manage them all; they are very different genres, but in the end, I don't think Bowie is quite right. I have to admit, I don't know some of them...

      yeah, but it's temporary...

Czesław Niemen and Townes Van Zandt
    • SandroGiacobbe
      11 jul 16
      you of my Italian?
    • tonysoprano
      11 jul 16
almost everyone... Niemen and van Zandt are highly recommended... go with both... the latter is very underrated, but with albums like "Our Mother The Mountain" you can't help but appreciate his genius... then Niemen, on the other hand, is Polish and effortlessly moved from one genre to another... listen to them all in chronological order, but above all, listen to ENIGMATIC...
    • SandroGiacobbe
      11 jul 16
I'll definitely take note of them, just as I hope you take note of all those on the other side.

maybe I'll try with people like Gaetano and Dalla...I don't know...let's see...

First of all, there were at least ten or twenty of them. After I've listened to them again, I'll rank them. Lisa Germano... Absolutely amazing.
