"It is part of me convincing myself that I am a poet. But it takes a lot of dedication. A lot of dedication. Poets don’t drive. Poets don’t go to the supermarket. Poets don’t take out the trash. Poets aren’t part of the Parent-Teacher Association. Poets don’t even picket in front of the Public Housing office. Poets don’t even talk on the phone. Poets don’t talk to anyone. Poets listen. And usually, they know why they are poets! Yes... how can I say? The world doesn’t need more poetry, there’s already Shakespeare. (There is already enough of everything. Whatever comes to mind, there’s already enough of it. Maybe there was already too much with electricity. People have said it. People have said the light bulb was already too much.) Poets live in the countryside. They behave like gentlemen. And they live by their gentleman’s code. And they die in poverty. They drown in lakes. Usually, poets end up very badly. Just look at Keats. Or Jim Morrison."
"I don’t intend to let love influence my songs. Songs come from the Tree of Life. Love is not on the Tree of Life. Love is on the Tree of Knowledge, the Tree of Good and Evil. In pop music, there are plenty of love songs. Who are they for? Neither for you nor for me. Love can be used in many ways that backfire on those who use it. Love is a democratic principle. A Greek affair."
(Bob Dylan, 1991 interview - quoted in A. Carrera, "The Voice of Bob Dylan", Feltrinelli)
