The Pink Floyd of "The Dark Side Of The Moon" have nothing to do with Prog, otherwise it's good. Even though I much prefer Soft Machine, Crimson, and Jethro Tull to Genesis.

De gustibus. For example, I definitely find Tull below Genesis (although they're great too), while with Soft and Crimson the thing gets much tougher. Genesis, Soft Machine, and King Crimson are all among my absolute favorites.

Well, certainly with "The Dark Side Of The Moon" we're not talking about psychedelia at all. If it's not prog, what should it be? :)
    • hjhhjij

Classy pop-rock with loungey psychedelic hints. Very nice, mind you.

I consider The Dark Side of The Moon to be one of the few prog-like albums by PF.

Framing Pink Floyd is tough. They are unique and unrepeatable.

Syd, I don't remember if you already know the Comus. Enlighten me please ;)

Yes, I know them... but I still need to explore them properly before adding them here ;)

In my opinion, thanks to "First Utterance," it deserves a spot in the top 15 (maybe instead of the ELP).

I had completely forgotten about this ranking; tomorrow I'll listen to this one by Comus more carefully ;)

Then in general I also agree on the choice of albums, except for "Discipline," which is a masterpiece but has nothing to do with progressive :)

Several bands are missing from the lineup, but it’s a great ranking, even though the downside is that it’s a ranking. The only point of disagreement: King Crimson should be not fourth, but first in terms of importance and charisma. For the rest, I hope it gets updated with other bands.

Hi Syd! This top 15 with 18 artists is really cool, very original :)
Then I’ll tell you: Camel (ABSOLUTELY). I know Hjhhjij will shoot me for this, but I can't see Van Der Graaf (they're good, don't get me wrong) above KC.
I mean, for me, King Crimson are in first place by a long shot, but do as you like :).
Brand X doesn’t seem prog to me. The names in there, however, are all good. Bye!

    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
"I know that Hjhhjij will shoot me, but I can't see the Van Der Graaf (good guys, don't get me wrong) above the KC." If I had mentioned any other name and not King Crimson, I would probably have shot.
    • pana
      31 dec 12
No, whether Van Der Graff are above Genesis or Soft Machine (just to mention 2 bands that I really like) doesn't make a difference to me, but the Ching... sono i Ching.

Let's say that the ranking is just a large number of artists thrown together randomly, there isn't a real criterion (except for the top 3-4 positions).
  • hjhhjij
    31 dec 12
Remove Brand X and insert Camel and Comus Syd :)

    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
I leave Brand X aside. As I stated in a previous review, I find some Genesis-like hints in them, even though they are mostly jazz-rock. I have listened to scattered pieces by Camel (Lady Fantasy above all), but never an entire album. The same goes for Comus. Today I'm also revisiting "Palepoli" by my fellow citizens Osanna, and I am adding "Aria" by another one of my compatriots, Alan Sorrenti. I think I’ll throw in Napoli Centrale too!
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Yes, but also the N.Centrale do Jazz-Rock. I can already see the Area here more because they did a bit of everything. Have you ever heard a Camel album? Really? The first 5 are a must-listen :) As for Comus, there's only First Utterance, you can completely skip the second. If you like Utterance, there's the EP Out of the Coma, which is nice, just released this year :)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Smiling and Osanna suit us just fine ;)
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
Alright, the next ones I’ll listen to will be the first by Comus, some by Camel (the ones I find in Full on YouTube), and I’ll brush up on Palepoli.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Come on, maybe download them but not on YouTube :( It only takes a moment to download them, come on, just "Mirage" and "The Snow Goose" to start. Good luck with the Comus instead :)

      31 dec 12
      Syd, I recommend Mirage... aloha

Oh right. Can't you wait a few days and then download? :)
    • SydBarrett96

Well, at least I'm starting to feel something on tube. Better than nothing.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
At this point, start seeing if you can find something from First Utterance by Comus, focusing only on that. Then come back and download it. And then buy the original, I'm telling you XD
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
I always start by downloading the albums; if I like them after listening to them many times, I buy the originals. :)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
And what did I say? :D However, I don’t know where you find the Utterance by the Comus from you :) Well, with a bit of patience. In the meantime, download it Giacomino, because if you’re in the mood for sick, dark, unsettling, luciferian, and folk-sabbath stuff, they are perfect :)
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12

"Chastity chaser virile for the virgin's virtue
Excite her exciter you better go before you bleed and he hurts you
He chased the chaste you better leave if you value your virtue

Hymen hunter, hands of steel, crack you open and your red flesh peel
Pain procurer, eyes of fire pierce your womb and push still higher
Comus rape, Comus break sweet young virgin's virtue take
Naked flesh flowing hair her terror screams they cut the air

Comes the sunlight summer day Comus wakes he starts to play
He starts to play he starts to play he starts to play" Song To The Comus (First Utterance 1971) Toh, have fun with this part of the text :D
  • hjhhjij
    31 dec 12
"As I stated in a previous review, I find some Genesis-like hints here." Well, if anything, it's the opposite; in Genesis's A Trick of The Tail, there are Brandixxian hints (Los Endos). The common denominator is always the pot-bellied dwarf.

    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
I find a bit of Genesis in Brand X, not so much in the first album but in "Morrocan Roll." In the end, that little dwarf chef is always in the middle!
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
I also find a bit of Genesis in there: Phil Collins :D I mean, Brand X is in the Weather Report, Mahavishnu vein, etc. Collins co-founded Brand X with Jones (I think they met while playing on Eno's records, by the way) precisely because he wanted something different from Genesis (and indeed he played on Taking Tiger, Another Green World, and Before and After by Eno during those years). A man everywhere :D
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
For this reason, it's the greatest for me. :)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
He was undoubtedly an exceptional drummer. If you listen to how the drums sound in Eno's records... enjoy.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
And there aren't those amazing Genesisian/Brandixxian virtuosos, you know. But you can still enjoy it.
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
The only work of Brianino I know is Before and After the Science, beautiful (By the River :Q___).
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Masterpiece, yes. There they are on the drums, people like Phil Collins and Jaki Liebezeit (Can) to name a few. But the three previous ones are masterpieces as well (the first one isn't, but it's close). I'm talking about the non/ambient albums :) And in the two before, Philco is always there.
  • hjhhjij
    31 dec 12
Am I going crazy, or did you just add Hammill now? That's fine anyway, but I would have preferred a Silent Corner, an In Camera, or a Chameleon. Over is nicer (one of the most beautiful albums ever, in my humble opinion) but it's his songwriting peak, it has little to nothing to do with prog. But go ahead and keep that album; it fits in anywhere :)

Did you see that I included your friend too? By the way, I heard Over a while ago, and I really liked it quite a bit. The voice is very low though, far from that of VDGG.

Did you see that I included your friend too? Anyway, I heard Over a while ago, and I really liked it quite a bit. The voice is very low, though, far from that of VDGG.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Sure, it has nothing to do with Van Der Graaf :) His most sincere and intimate album (even more than all the others, I mean :), a journey through the pain caused by the end of a long-lasting relationship. The lyrics are something incredible. Hammill's voice in Over, I couldn't describe it in any way. It simply is; period. Vocally, he will never reach such intensity again. I said :)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Also because Hammill does whatever he wants with his voice, I think he has sung in every possible way :)
    • SydBarrett96

Yes, fantastic. The lyrics are also very inspired; I read them translated into Italian.

    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
I haven't listened to them in a long time, but I remember that album as one of the most dazzling gems of Italian prog. Who cares if it came out in the middle of 1977?
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
It reminds me a lot of A Trick Of The Tail, the same romanticism. "Don't lock away the stars" gives me chills.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
It's true. The guitarist, by heart, has a style that strongly resembles that of Hackett's on Trick and Wind & Wuthering, albums from which he has undoubtedly taken a lot. He has expertly plundered the Banksian romanticism. Always by heart, a beautiful album has emerged from it.
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Oh, translate the part of the text from "Song To The Comus" that I copied and pasted above, so maybe you can get an idea :XD
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
Yes, really splendid. I'm busy right now, maybe I'll translate it later. ;)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Splendid? How twisted you are :D Anyway, let me give you a little help: Comus used to rape virgins and similar for sport XD
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
No no splendid, I was referring to the Inn, BUT WHAT DID YOU UNDERSTAND? :) I told you that I would translate that later, but it seems like you've already given me some unsettling hints...
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Oh, thank goodness XD I'm feeling more relaxed XD Yes, the unsettling hint is the basis of the whole text, but once translated, it has a stronger impact :)
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
Anyway, I don’t know if I’ll like it, at least for me coming from Crimsonian research, Genesisian romanticism, and Van Der Graaf philosophical musings. I don’t know, I don’t judge because I haven’t really listened to much, but…
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
The Van Der Graaf are ultimately much darker and sicker (and deeper, but that was obvious) while the Crimson are much more challenging, so... But First Utterance is one of the most original Prog albums ever. We could define it as a Psych/Prog/Acid-Folk. Trust me, it’s worth it :) And if you’re looking for romance, just listen to the second track, the acoustic enchantment of "The Herald".
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
Of course, you won’t find the universal themes that are present in Hammill’s texts :)
  • hjhhjij
    31 dec 12
I still feel compelled to recommend you The End of An Ear (1970) and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975) by Wyatt :) Just a heads up that both are very different from one another and have nothing to do with Rock Bottom (an absolutely unique work). The End of an Ear is also a bit challenging.

    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
When we talk about coincidence: yesterday I decided to dust off a bit of Rock Bottom. Now I'm dying with Moon In June. :')
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
"Rock Bottom" is my absolute favorite album, and it's well-known; that's exactly where it gathers dust because I don't have the courage to put it back on. I haven't listened to "Third" in a while either, but if it catches me, I'll be more than happy to listen to it again.
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
Even though I consider them both masterpieces, I prefer "Third" over "Rock Bottom" (to each their own). I have a plethora of favorite albums: indiscriminately all those by Genesis from the 70'-77' period, Pawn Hearts, Dark Side Of The Moon, Thick As A Brick, Red, In the Court Of Crimson King, Born To Run, The River, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Close To The Edge, etc...
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
"I prefer 'Third' to 'Rock Bottom.' There are cases where de gustibus is a must. Yes, I too have a ton of favorite records, but they all come AFTER Rock Bottom (except maybe Pawn Hearts)."
    • SydBarrett96
      31 dec 12
I think I'll add "Queen II" here anyway (another one of my many favorite albums), the progressive influences are definitely there. Brian May has never denied his Hackettian influences, especially regarding the use of tapping in "Nursery Cryme." Tapping that he would later pick up again in Brighton Rock three years later. :)
    • hjhhjij
      31 dec 12
That in Queen II the Queens mixed progressive influences (a bit Yes-inspired) with Glam, Hard Rock, and Pop is undeniable. A thoroughly enjoyable concoction in my opinion.
    • SydBarrett96

Beautiful, one of the first albums that opened the door for me to this genre of music. Nostalgically, I still consider it a masterpiece.

I really like Be a lot too, even more than the next two (actually a bit more). The first one and the day at the races are nice as well, and Innuendo.

They are my favorites by Queen, very beautiful. Now I have to go Hj, see you later. Bye! :)

Everything is fine, or almost, but it is UNACCEPTABLE to place Yes in ninth position. If we talk about prog, we must also acknowledge Relayer, and I propose to move them up to fourth, shifting everyone else down. ;>

    • SydBarrett96
      4 jan 13
I'll repeat what I wrote above: apart from the very first potions, all the others are in random order. ;)
    • hjhhjij

Yes, but then again the UNACCEPTABLE thing would be seeing the yes votes above bands like Gentle Giant, Area, and Van Der Graaf Generator :)

      This is also true. :)
    • pana

Ninth place is fair, come on. Everyone above is superior, and for me, so are ELP, Camel, Comus, and Wyatt (although I don't personally consider them progressive).
    • hjhhjij
      4 jan 13
Wyatt is also progressive, in certain albums (mainly with the Soft). I agree with Pana except for the Ellepì, to which I prefer the Si.
