    but what about Pink Floyd, aside from the Atom Heart Mother suite, what progressive music have they actually made? I don't consider them a prog band at all.

    For Pink Floyd, any label feels tight, at least since Atom Heart Mother, I believe that Progressive is the most suitable one: Atom, Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH, and especially Animals are, for me, fully-fledged Prog albums. It depends on what one means by the term, though; it is true that they can also be excluded from this genre, but seeing them at the top here makes me very happy regardless.

    Good ranking, with some positions that are, at least for me, curious and some artists (Floyd, Mahavishnu, Tangerine) not exactly progressive (which I also did). At this point, I recommend Comus ;)

    For me, progressive is not a genre; it's mostly an attitude. You can be progressive in electronic music and also in metal. I've always seen it that way.

    One of these days I will revolutionize the ranking, starting from 11th place down. Van Der Graaf are one of the prog bands I admire and respect. I've placed them last only temporarily.

    As for Porcupine Tree, could someone recommend where to start? I've always heard great things about them but I've never managed to approach them the right way?

    If you like music that's a bit heavier, you can listen to Fear of a Blank Planet; otherwise, start with The Sky Moves Sideways. Keep in mind that the early albums were more Pink Floyd-esque and then progressively got heavier.

    @jdv666: if you want references to the psychedelia of the early Pink Floyd "On The Sunday of Life" and "Up The Downstairs," if you're looking for something more distinctly Prog in structure ("The Sky Moves Sideways," "Signify," the live "Coma Divine"), if you want refined Pop-Rock ("Stupid Dream," "Lightbulb Sun") or Rock seasoned with Prog-Metal impulses ("In Absentia," "Deadwing," "Fear of a Blank Planet," or the splendid EP "Nil Recurring").

    Here, progrock has been more detailed. Anyway, with Porcupine, you can never go wrong; maybe skip the latest "The Incident," which I personally find a bit weak.
