Skilled storyteller of fairy tales with a visionary and dark touch, whether they are comedies ("Beetlejuice") or dramatic films ("Edward Scissorhands"). Some of his "freaks" remain unforgettable characters. Perhaps he has always lacked a masterpiece with a capital M, but he has certainly made quite a few good films (with ups and downs). For some years now, he's been brewing something. Ah, his influence in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is unmistakable, and that, indeed, is a masterpiece. more

Personally, I find him quite amusing in his comedic roles, although he is starting to become rather annoying. However, as a dramatic actor, he has proven himself to be very, very good on several occasions—a real surprise. His performances in "The Truman Show" and especially in "Man on the Moon" and "Eternal Sunshine" are undoubtedly of high caliber. It's a shame he has abandoned dramatic cinema for too long. Decent rubber-faced comic, excellent dramatic actor. more

If I voted only up to 1980, the score would be 5, but it's been 25 years now that he’s been serving up one worse film than the other, and lately, he's reached terrifyingly low levels. In the past, he was one of the masters of Italian Horror. I give a score of 4 for the period '69-'74, 5 from '75 to '80, 3.5-4 from '82 to '87, 1.5 for the '90s, and an absolute 0 from '00 onward. In the end, let’s say he deserves a three, for the great films made in the past. more
