Sam Lightnin' Hopkins - Cotton
Lightnin' Hopkins was born in 1912 in Centerville (according to the 2010 census, the population was just 892, with 10.3% of families having a female head of household without a husband...) in Leon County, Texas, halfway between Dallas and Houston.
In the early thirties, he moved to Houston in search of success but in vain and returned briefly to Centerville where he worked as a farmer until he decided to try his luck again in Houston.
It seems that during the sixties, Hopkins recorded more material than any other blues musician, opening for the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. He died on January 30, 1982, in Houston, and over 4,000 people attended his funeral...
