Picking up the brilliant idea from... myself, here's a little taste of the (many) ranking columns that will see the light in 2021. Starting today, we will explore the albums of the great Vinicio Capossela, from the worst (or the least beautiful) to his masterpiece. Let's jump right in:

10. All'una e trentacinque circa (1990)
Unfortunately, his debut sits at the bottom of the ranking. First of all, let me clarify something: All'una e trentacinque circa is a very good album, featuring intriguing piano bar tones and containing a handful of classics (Scivola vai via, Stanco e perduto, the title track), but also experiments/divertissements like Pongo sbronzo that come across as almost tragicomic. So why does it deserve the last position? Simply because good Vinicio is still finding his footing; some tracks are still quite raw and anonymous (Christmas song and Suite delle quattro ruote). A very good debut, but the best was yet to come. Exacting rating? Sure, why not.
Exacting rating: 7+
The gem: All'una e trentacinque circa (2018 Remaster)

Down at the pier the weather was nice
the sailors were drinking American wine
and I wish I could go back to spring again
now they’ve all gone away
this is the life that goes on
Some stayed behind to get drunk with the song
...and they wish they could go back to spring again
oh such a spring!
the noise of the city, the salt in the air
it sounds everywhere but I don’t care anymore
and I wish I could go back to spring again
they try with words and over the years
everything turns into tears
they don’t know but they try anyway
the clouds have cleared
the sun has hit the sky
I saw all the people going to work
just to die
and... I just wish I could go back to spring.
Oh Such a Spring

Lou Reed - I'm Waiting For the Man

Lou Reed dug into the depths of pure despair.

He used to assert how great rock 'n roll was, which is why people should start dying for it.

The truth is you don't fully understand music, at least not until it can give you back the rhythm to dream: "An entire generation running for a Fender bass, people have to die for music.

You die for everything else, so why not do it for music?", he would say.

It almost seems that for him life was too awful to go on.

Lou Reed's words are a great way to approach the history of punk.

Lou's glory was showing us how everything is truly a mess.

He urges you to go further, down into the depths of hell, to have all the experiences life has to offer, the deep and the profane, before deciding whether to end it all.

There is always a fascination with personalities capable of living boundary-pushing psychic experiences like William Burroughs or Norman Mailer, to name a few. Lou Reed was someone who knew the real secrets of life and sought to extract some truth from it.

He had been the most influential artist of his entire generation, plain and simple.

Yes, the Beatles and the Stones were more popular, but when it comes to the honesty of human emotions, nobody could beat Lou Reed.

Any oddity, anything private and too mortifying to admit, he had already tucked away in a song. (source: "Radio Chinaski")

Alexander Tucker, a piece from the LP "Portal".
Alexander Tucker - Andromeon (Official Music Video)
Very simply, I hear a droning guitar base over which minimal electric string dialogues are added, flashes in a black sky, morning guitar chords, a stentorian voice.... it's morning again and I consider "Portal" an excellent painting of our mind.
Thank you
