I want to recall what happened about ten years ago when I was on vacation in Rhodes, where I met Sami Modiano, a survivor of Auschwitz, at the Kahal Kadosh Shalom Synagogue. It was a chance meeting; we introduced ourselves, and he took my hand, and together we walked and talked in the Synagogue. He had a low, composed, polite, and gentle tone of voice. I remember his eyes well; they alone told a thousand stories. He shared his story with us and asked about ours. We were eagerly awaiting the birth of our first child, and he asked who was on the way. We didn't know since we wanted it to be a surprise, but he, bidding us farewell, wanted to know the names we had chosen: "Martino if it’s a boy and Lucia if it’s a lovely girl!" Well, Martino arrived a few months later, and Lucia came three years after... That name, Lucia, moved him because it was the name of the sister he lost in the concentration camp... and I believe that in his heart, he was happy about the possibility. Long live life.
