Bass revealed to the New York Times in 1989 that his call-and-response voice for this song was not intentional. He recalled, "When we were recording it, I forgot some words. So, you didn’t stop while the tape was rolling, and I remembered from church what to do if you forget the words. I sang, 'Ummm, ummm, ummm' and it worked well."
