Many works by Carl Holsoe (1863-1935) depict the interiors of his own home, with his wife engaged in embroidery or reading. It is curious to observe the antique furniture, the draperies, the objects hanging on the walls, and compare the settings to our homes today. A century has passed, but they seem incredibly contemporary. His paintings exude the tranquility of family life, a sense of peace, the slow passage of time, and the muffled serenity that the colors of summers have in the Nordic countries.
