Here we are at "Piazza Uta el Hamman", the heart of the medina of Chefchaouen, where the main alleys converge that wind through the labyrinthine old town in the eponymous province of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.

The inhabitants belong to the Berber tribes of the Rif and Arabs (a minority). Known as the "blue pearl" due to the typical blue coloration of its houses, the city was considered a "holy city," and entry was prohibited for foreigners.

There are many fanciful theories regarding the reasons for the characteristic blue coloring of the buildings; some claim that they were painted blue by Jews who wanted to give them the color of paradise, while others believe that this color serves to keep mosquitoes and flies away.

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471, and its original population mainly consisted of Andalusian exiles, both Jewish and Muslim, primarily from the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga. For this reason, the old part of the city resembles those Andalusian towns, with small streets of irregular layout and gnente...
