Slint - di Lorenzo Casaccia (an excellent short essay on Slint's music) :-)

That "nostalgic" among the De-Generi is really beautiful, isn't it? Does Minneapolis really mean "city of lakes"? You never stop learning! :-)

Sorry, Fusillo... I only heard the official version (it's perfect as it is: why spoil it with bonus tracks that are sometimes out of place?) ;-)

Odra, thank you for the question! (I have a soft spot for discussions about comparisons between music and cinema :-D). Anyway, when I said "flows as smoothly as oil," I was referring to style, technique, and FORM. Yet in Hawks' films, we find plenty of conflicts and breaks, as you pointed out... Here’s the greatness of Hawks: he camouflages these discontinuities in a cohesive and linear narrative blend... Just like Zappa in "Hot Rats," where he takes instruments and styles from the most disparate genres and makes them coexist with disarming naturalness, creating a sensation of lightness and depth at the same time. The same feeling that (coincidence!) you get when watching "A Dollar of Honor"! :-D

In Hot Rats, as in any Hawks film (let’s take “Rio Bravo” as an example), everything is perfect. Everything flows smoothly like oil. Everything contributes to making the work harmonious, balanced, BEAUTIFUL. It’s a subtle interplay of weights and counterweights, a highly complex trick in its execution but simple, clear, and linear in appearance. A game that only Masters like Zappa and Hawks knew how to play, without falling into the treacherous trap of mannerism.

Yes, formalist...in a good way, you know...formalist like a Howard Hawks film...in that sense...

they start as carefree and bouncy little songs and end up sinking like cosmic agonies <<< Nice comparison with Roxy Music: I had never thought of that! A perfect review, well done Bogus...The album is really beautiful, especially the title track and Zero The Hero, the two most experimental tracks, where jazz merges with electronics in a...spatial union! A surrealist album and deeply zappian.

Beautiful! It would fit well among the recommended ones, for the richness of content, the depth of analysis, and the pleasure of reading. Well done Grey Velvet! :-)

Hilarious review. Remarkable album that moves between free jazz and totale music. It consists of six highly inspired tracks, two based on the skills of the individuals (Pimp and Gumbo, featuring pyrotechnic guitar, saxophone, and violin solos), and four based on Zappa's genius (lush and colorful arranger, capable of intoxicating the listener with dense and geometric scores). I prefer this latter type of tracks. A formalist work? Perhaps, but of the highest class. P.S. It might have been more accurate to credit this album to the duo Zappa/Underwood.

A round of applause for the recovery of Fusillo. Great record. This is a particularly inspired work by the most "crucca" band from Canterbury. Amidst noise, previews of no-wave and industrial, free jazz, and Teutonic cabaret, the neurotic and relentless voice of Krause stands out. I might just listen to it again right now...
