Ah, just to clarify: the only manga I still read (albeit occasionally) are those by Mitsuru Adachi (I would love to write something about Touch or, even better, Rough one day...). As for having problems or not, I wouldn’t know... :))

"The ruin of every child, the monstrous creature that has forever changed (for the worse) the world of animation." It might be... but I think these criticisms should be aimed primarily at the second, dreadfully boring part. The entire first part with Goku as a child is, in my opinion, perfectly valid for a very young audience. Let’s not forget that we’re talking about a series from the mid-’80s. And let’s not forget that my generation grew up with Ken Shiro and that the immediately preceding generation was used to devouring math books and salads of electronics... ;)))

@Muffin: so true. Video Girl Ai is one of the most beautiful mangas that have arrived in Italy with the second wave by StarComics: it boasted an impressive graphic care, especially for the spasmodic use of screentones. Too bad that damn Katsura has not been able to replicate it, churning out garbage after garbage.. :((

Regarding the actual quality of the manga: in my opinion, the entire first part with Goku as a child is a gem. It has the same surreal absurdity of Dr. Slump, along with a well-constructed, long-running story and perfectly fitting characters. The whole training segment with Master Roshi, the first tournament... truly delightful. Then, in my view, it gradually becomes an absolute drag. All events are the same, characters lack charisma, villains leave you indifferent, and the humor is completely abandoned. I also think there’s a graphical decline: it’s no coincidence that all the battles take place in only vaguely outlined canyons or out in the desert...

Well... frankly, I don’t know what to think about the issue of censorship. In the very first part of the manga, there are indeed not only a few vaguely "risqué" scenes (e.g., Bulma showing herself to Master Roshi + some comments about young Chi-Chi... always softened by the comedic tone of the manga), but, above all, a whole series of references to Japanese culture that - very likely - would not be understood by the Italian audience. For example: the fact that Master Roshi gets a nosebleed every time he sees a naked woman. In these cases, I believe that adapting it is not simple: either you leave everything as it is, risking that the audience doesn’t get it, or you censor it and try to fix what you can... and often it ends up being a mess. Dragon Ball might also be appreciated by an older audience (I read the very first edition of the manga when I was... I don’t know, 16-17), but I think it mainly targets young children. So, I don’t know...

What an awesome recommendation. Well done. You've made me really want to listen to it. :)

Dear Dr. Misogino, at the risk of coming off as a humorless prude, I must confess that I didn't really enjoy the latest installment of your column. I mean, there are "women in distress" who truly suffer because of certain "boxing husbands": I’m not sure how appropriate it is to joke about it. Don't you think?

@Giusti: are you sure it’s not just election campaigning?! What if in a few months we end up with some kind of pardon and my inbox is flooded?! We need a concrete commitment here, a pact with the debaserians!! :))

I'm super busy, but this album is beautiful. I really liked Gehenna Belvedere by Smith as well. I'll come back later and maybe say a bit more. Great job Panico!
