LA RECENSIONE

"In terms of heavy-psych, I don't think there's anything better out there at the moment" (C. Sorge - Rumore nn. 198-199 - review "Blowback - Morning Wood" rating 8/10)

The Blowback are yet another combo coming from Orebro, Sweden (already home to Dead Man and Witchcraft, probably today the small town with the highest concentration of bands since the late '60s San Francisco). In this 2008 debut full length, they mix the usual doomy blues Sabbath-like riffs with Kyuss-style stoner boogie rides stripped of any desert-lysergic charm. They showcase super heavy distortions, great tavern anthem musicality, and barrow-loads of groove.

Pretty much like the Orange Goblin used to do before donning the guise of Motorhead de no'artri.

All this to say: me, here, I can't hear all this "psych".
There are no effects like "rush hour traffic at the ring road to Saturn", there's no extended instrumental degeneration diluted over twenty minutes, there are no whispers, pants, and sighs, no loops, no quasar, no delay... and a couple of wah wahs certainly don't make pissi pissi.

In short, this "Morning Wood" is very little smoke and a lot of roast.

Which, as roasts go, isn't even that bad, to be clear. ...but what my grandma used to make... uuhhh... chettelodicoaffare?!?

Beyond the metaphor: an album like many we've heard and, above all, like many we've been hearing for the past ten years at this point. Then, if you go back to unearth folks now meteoritized like Acrimony, it almost makes you want to skip straight to dessert.

"In terms of heavy psych, I think that, at the moment, there are plenty of people out there better than these Blowback." (Bartleboom - Debaser - review "Blowback - Mourning Wood". Rating 2.5/5)

Summary by Bot

Blowback's 'Morning Wood' offers heavy, Sabbath-like riffs and stoner boogie grooves reminiscent of Orange Goblin. However, it lacks the psychedelic effects and originality that define heavy psych. The album feels familiar and outdated, not standing out in the current scene.
