Joel & Ethan Coen Blood Simple

splendid film, excellent debut by the Coen brothers. I’ve seen very little of black or pink humor; however, I can inform you that "texas" was the word used by the Native Americans who inhabited that land to say "Friends"... That’s black humor, indeed there’s very little humor here as well.

Why does one minute of math rock last more than two minutes (in the link...)? It's not that mathematical, is it...?

Fosca, I appreciate your noble intent to smear a bit of shit on the current Minister of Education, but since you got that "photo," I’m skipping your messages altogether. Gelmini's face is the most annoying avatar I have ever seen. (Don't worry, I still care about you).

"You brought up Dick when I was referring to the history of cinema (go reread comment 41: come on, be a good sport ;-D), so as for nonsense—sorry, but I was also referring to the history of cinema: Dick has been adapted to the screen countless times: 'Total Recall' cited by the doctor—based on the story 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale' (1966)—'Scanner', 'Blade Runner', 'Minority Report', etc... The work of Dick that comes closest thematically to Matrix is Ubik, for which, to stay within the cinematic realm, Dick also wrote a screenplay, available in the paperback edition from Fanucci Editore (and probably now from other places as well). That said, it seems to me that bringing up Ubik when discussing the heavy influences on the conception of Matrix seems appropriate. Something I still don't think applies to Apuleius and his 'The Golden Ass'... then of course, as you say, 'in a film everyone sees what they want to see.' Imagine, I had a classmate who, after watching American History X, concluded that the naziskin weren’t entirely wrong, in fact, they were right to take punitive actions against foreigners in the neighborhood, given that in the end Darren is killed by a black man for issues indirectly related to racism.
"Regarding the rest of your post, sorry but I have nothing to respond to [...] so feel free to consider the film bad while I will continue to think of Nolan as a great director." There's no need for you to apologize; and when did I ever say the film was bad? I said that Inception is NOT the cinematic phenomenon they want us to believe. In about twenty posts, I never even voted for the film. I limited myself to saying it was a disappointment and clarified that if I had seen it without the expectations built by the advertising campaign, I would have considered it a nice film (post 4)... Are you sure I’m the one who doesn’t understand? :D "You see, we're on two different planes: is it possible that I have to explain things to you three times?" And who ever told you we’re on the same plane, excuse me? What is it that you’re re-explaining to me??? :)"

cptemofiliaco: honestly, bringing Apuleius into the conversation seems like bullshit (de gustibus)... "In an era where the 'new stories' to be told are few" It's not that there are few, it's that the audience always asks for the same things. Doing something new is risky, it's a gamble; obviously, Hollywood prefers to play it safe ("safe" up to a point, obviously); and anyway, a director's skill isn't just in telling a story, that's the screenwriter's job— the director's skill lies in the way that story is told... and Nolan has nothing superior to the Wachowskis (from this statement, one might think I adore Matrix and the Wachowskis... a brief personal consideration on the film and the directors: Matrix: epoch-making, like it or not, you can't ignore this 1998 film in 2010; the film currently discussed, Inception, billed as the cinematic phenomenon of the year, confirms this; Matrix 2 and Matrix 3: dried cowshit left out in the sun. Wachowskis: the only directors who know how to use special effects in a personal way... I can't think of many other merits, not that they are terrible, but, well, a director is something more).///I never said that I only like Memento... where did you read that, sorry? "I focus on those technical aspects that make me 'enjoy' what I'm watching." You want to enjoy with your eyes? Then Speed Racer is definitely better, and even the first Matrix... in every respect (editing, cinematography, special effects, sound editing). Then of course, if you want a film with depth and a sociological analysis of society, you certainly wouldn't watch the Wachowskis... but neither would you watch Nolan... I can't tell you if Paola was right in saying that Nolan is liked on this site, he definitely doesn't disgust me, but I completely agree with her when she claims that without Matrix, this film would never have been written.

As for the discussion regarding the originality of the central theme of Matrix (the different planes of reality), perhaps before mentioning Total Recall, it would be appropriate to reference Ubik by Philip K. Dick, 1969...

Hemophiliac: beyond technical skills, the main task of a director is to create a film that works. Matrix works, this Inception does not... end of discussion. As for whether Nolan or the Wachowskis are better as directors, I don’t know: Nolan's best directorial work is definitely Memento, his first film; for the Wachowskis, it’s Speed Racer. The Wachowskis have recovered from the two dreadful sequels of Matrix, while Nolan has been in free fall from Prestige to Inception (without reading Batman Returns, it would have been rubbish)... The directors who truly have what it takes to become great (in the truest sense of the word, not in terms of box office) are others. Refn above all.
