Jennifer Kent Australia 2014
There’s a film that tells you not all mothers feel like being mothers.
There’s a film that tells you not all mothers harbor love.
There’s a film that tells you you don't necessarily have to hurt someone to become a monster.
There’s a film that tells you monsters are the first victims.
There’s a film that tells you there are things you have to live with and that you will never overcome.
There’s a film that tells you all these things that you already thought you mastered, but it’s actually right: good thing it explained them to you, you never understood them so deeply. And you're not stupid...
There’s a film that calling it a horror would be doing it an injustice.
There’s a film that calling it an auteur film would be doing a disservice to horror.
There’s a film that calling it a masterpiece is saying too much. Because it’s a film, and you don't say much about films: you watch them.
There’s a film you must watch, because afterwards you will be a different person.
Then there are tons of other films that just scare the crap out of you, and if you want, we can talk about them later over popcorn, Motta favors, and fourth-rate beer.
But for now, be good and go do your homework, because there's a film you need to see. Maybe right now it won't drive you crazy, but it will stay with you, and sooner or later you won't be able to help but love it. And at that point, everything else will hurt a little less.
Back in the day, no one would have bet two cents on it. Too bad, they’d be millionaires.
Thank you, Jennifer, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
