This phrase does not convince me at all. Knowing a story is not the same as living it; it remains a fiction. Have I ever seen Yahweh's face when he speaks to Cain? Have I ever dined in a 17th-century inn? Have I ever been able to admire Silvia's derrière?
Literature can be training but not a match.
If we then look at the history of mankind, we realize that it is indeed impossible to live backward; we can only do so within the realm of what we are told, which is often just a mere representation of events functionally arranged according to a predetermined design.
