Verdena Live @ Black Out, Modica (RG) 20.12.2011

They are good, very good. I appreciate their music a lot since the early days, even though it has changed quite a bit over time. I am a fan of theirs, but being objective, I've also heard that on some occasions they have faltered live, showing up at some concerts not exactly stellar (whoever was in Gradisca d'Isonzo last June or at the Atlantico in Rome recently knows what I’m referring to...). I'm not an expert in the field, but overall, I really like them live, and the fact that the instruments overshadow the singer’s voice makes the live experience even more engaging in many cases (see Gulliver, Starless, etc. performed live...). Anyway, they are good; the double "Wow" is very nice, even though I am more "attached" to the early albums, among which "Il suicidio dei samurai" stands out.

The review isn't written very well, but your effort for the track-by-track should still be appreciated. Some might find it boring, but many others, who may not know the album in question, might find it useful. "Parachutes" is an excellent work; the subsequent "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is also quite good, although a bit inferior... after that, there's a collapse, leading to the last album, which is truly heavy, boring, and cloying, with very few exceptions.

I really like the Cure, but one cannot deny that they really missed the mark with this album. "The Cure," their second-to-last album, was overall decent (I cite, for example, "Anniversary," "Us or Them," "Taking Off," and "Going Nowhere" above all), but this one is truly flat.
Okay: "Underneath the Stars," "The Hungry Ghost," "The Perfect Boy," and the last two aren't bad, but the others... for heaven's sake...

It's a matter of tastes... I actually appreciate the track-by-track approach, which is very useful for giving the reader an idea of the type of tracks that make up the album in question, something that often proves essential when the person doesn't know the artist and/or the album being discussed. Personally, "23 am" didn't excite me, as you rightly pointed out in the review; it’s a new path for the artist, which is definitely commendable. However, I prefer the dream-trance of "Dreamland."

I agree with you, Avvelenata.
I also had higher expectations for this first album; that said, I am very pleased to see, in this moment of great musical disappointment surrounding us, a NEW group that has something to say, and that partly brings back that genre that I love so much and which was in vogue in the '80s (besides Depeche Mode, I would also cite similarities with the Pet Shop Boys in certain aspects).
More than "Better than love," I find their second single "Wonderful Life" to be beautiful.
I therefore enjoy the album halfway; some songs are truly remarkable, while others are too bland. We'll see their second work... in any case, their debut is undoubtedly good. Three and a half stars.

Nice review, although it describes the songs on the album a bit too little. As far as I'm concerned, I'm a fan of the Manics, and I must say that upon first listens, the album disappointed me quite a lot. Only after numerous listens was I able to appreciate it; I still think it's a good album (but definitely one of their worst), although it's too pompous (much more so than "Everything Must Go," which was a considerably superior album) and "commercial." Here’s my take: the first half of the album is very good, while the second half is definitely lacking... what do you think? I wanted your opinion.

Personally, I really liked their first three albums; however, I could never quite digest "Requiem." :(
I'll dig deeper into this EP instead...

Good job. I know the album quite well, and I consider it very good, overall, for the genre and for that period.
