It's zzzzzzz who is the most qualified to respond to you, but I can already tell you that if you don't want "deconstruction," I see it a bit hard for you to enjoy any album by Xiu Xiu. For me, the best is "A Promise," the least deconstructed, upon first listen, this one. The floor is yours, zzzzzz :)

I'm listening to it right now, it actually sounds more "polished" than the others, but not any less "strong." I'll update the comment once I've absorbed it.

Unfortunately, I have recently started exploring the genre, so I can't comment on the album, but I am happy to comment on the review: really well written.

"I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on": I give a 5 to these words.

Beautiful review. However, I've always found this album anything but fresh; rather, it's a bit too muddled, grainy, and I've never managed to get through it. Except for the nursery rhyme... "The people askin’ questions to the people with the answers/The people with the answers are the people with the questions/So the people with the questions ask the people with the answers/The people with the answers won’t tell the people with the questions the answer."

Among all the songs described, I highlight Innocent When You Dream, "the soundtrack of a solemn drunk" (both "barroom" and "78"), spot-on words. The album would deserve a 5, but not quite like some of Tom's others, so I unfortunately give it a solid 4. PS Thanks for the link, Hal!
