THE REVIEW

Think of CocoRosie as a doll.

A doll, yes, one of those elegant and antique-looking ones. She has an angelic face and is capricious, and when it rains, there in Paris, she retreats to hum in her little room in Montmartre, in the dream house of two New York sisters who found each other after many years apart.

While listening to La Maison De Mon Rêve, imagine yourself there, behind the door of the little room, eavesdropping on the music of the doll CocoRosie. That's exactly how it will come to your ears: anything but clear. Or as from a gramophone, which feels so much like jazz, with all the crackles that make it so lo-fi.

You will hear strange toy sounds, an acoustic guitar, uncertain drumbeats, and two intriguing, thin, and ironic voices. Fascinating, like their sweetly perverse music, which with so few (and primitive) instruments brings together many elements in a simple and intoxicating way. Blues, trip-hop, gospel, jazz, and lo-fi dance on slow and bare melodies that seem to resurface, universal, from the first half of the 20th century… "By Your Side" and "Good Friday", wonderful.

Touch and Go, presenting the "dream house" painted by the Cassady sisters in 2004, says that "Sierra sings and plays guitar and flute, Bianca sings and does percussion (bangs objects, makes things squeak, shakes a gold chain)". The first comes from singing (spiritual and opera), the second from poetry. A masterpiece debut.

From the speakers comes a brave low-fi lullaby made of two voices as sweet as they are sharp.

There’s something new out there, ephemeral and so powerful that it makes you stay on the first couch you find to see where all this inspiration can take you...

Simple, direct, yet extremely beautiful and able to get under your skin and shatter your heart.

One of the most beautiful records of the past decade. My heart is shattered.
