“They’ll last only one summer,” doom-mongering pundits declared. Yet, the second album from 883 went on to sell two million copies and included all the band’s classics (“Sei un mito”; “Come mai”; “Rotta X casa di Dio”; “Nella notte”). Plastic pop, sure, but (very) very fun.

You don't change a winning team, even if Repetto is (by now) a distant memory. Pezzali does everything by himself: two hits ("La regola dell'amico" and the title track) and a continuous flow of sounds and harmonies we've already heard thousands of times. Maybe he's run out of ideas. solo:

Cecchetto milks the goose that lays the golden eggs and imposes a frantic pace on Pezzali: one album per year. The artist from Pavia cobbles together a hasty work, with a few flashes of brilliance ("Una canzone d'amore") and very few ideas. But it still sells extremely well. forsennato:

The anger of the previous decade has vanished, replaced by the hedonistic optimism of the '80s. 8 love songs, among which "Notte prima degli esami" and "Ci vorrebbe un amico" stand out. Only "Qui" feels like a plunge into the past, but the abundant synthesizers in the control room inexorably herald the dawn of a new era.

A dreadful record, a poor imitation (even in the cover) of the already less-than-outstanding previous one. From the rowdy, populist title track to the mawkishness of "Vento selvaggio" nothing seems to escape the abyss where Venditti ought to end up: as he himself says, "Tutti all'inferno." finire:

Uncontainable, surprising, even refined. The best-selling hip-hop album in Italy bears the signature of the duo J-Ax/J-Ad, perhaps during their most inspired period. Tracks like "Tranqui Funky," "Domani," and "Il funkytarro" become hits from North to South (even though the two tend to tell the story of the Milanese suburbs more than Italy as a whole).

Although not a hardcore prog fan (in Italy I only really save PFM, more rock; some of Le Orme, and the first two Banco albums, I like the third less), "Darwin!" is certainly a masterpiece without shadows, with wonders scattered throughout side A ("L'evoluzione" has an endless series of instrumental variations on the theme) and a side B that is almost (I say almost) pop, with shorter and more immediate songs ("Cento occhi cento mani"; "750.000 anni fa... l'amore?"). In their creative den (a stable near Marino), Banco del Mutuo Soccorso wrote with this album a page of prog history (and beyond) that deserves everlasting glory.

After two niche albums, they sign with Warner, get booed by their early fans, but sell out massively, so hats off. The album, musically catchy and narratively surprising, is a sort of tribute to the Italian '70s poliziottesco cinema, with its tones and moods. Bianconi is in a state of grace, and all over Italy songs like "La guerra è finita," "Un romantico a Milano," "Il corvo Joe," which are not easy, are bouncing around. Tracks to memorize like "Sergio," "A vita bassa," "Il nulla" smell of The Smiths, as hasn't been seen for (too) long in the Belpaese.

A true superstar (he appeals to mothers and, in turn, their daughters), he leaves Italy and heads to London to work with Geoff Westley. The result is a pleasant, charming album, at times surprising (the shy rock of "Via"), but, underneath it all, evanescent. Yet it’s a record-breaking best-seller.

After Pinocchio, here he is revisiting the tale of Peter Pan. The "connections" are remarkable, starting with Captain Hook aka Toni Negri. Opus "elico" no.2. Their masterpiece. Played brilliantly, it is a mix of fun, beautiful music, and unrestrained quoting. "Pipppero" is the summer 1992 hit, but the songs that go down in history include, among others, "Uomini col borsello"; the most unlikely superhero of all time, "Supergiovane," and the wicked "Servi della gleba." Right now he’s a war machine. He’s moving at a breakneck pace and seems more in tune than ever with his (inexhaustible) audience. “Più bella cosa” sends him soaring up the charts, while “Stella gemella” confirms him as the champion of a pop that is as simple as it is, deep down, incredibly international. “L’aurora” is dedicated to his newborn daughter, and his love story with Michelle Hunziker fills the pages of national (and not only) tabloids.

The Apocryphal Gospels are the foundation of the beautiful reinterpretation of the life of Jesus, man and not God, as portrayed by the Genoese singer-songwriter. The not-yet-famous PFM plays with him, and in the bigoted Italy of the ’70s, it was a strong, and healthy, gut punch. Perhaps a bit too raw musically (the first part is quite monotonous), but tracks like "Via della croce" and "Tre madri" are ones to memorize. It closes with the epic "Il testamento di Tito," an idyll.

More musically refined than the previous one, Guccini nonetheless does not give up minimalism. Poems, more than songs. Luxurious stuff, though: "Lui e lei"; "Al Trist"; "Vedi cara"; "Giorno d'estate"; "La verità". Serving as a crown, the combative "Primavera di Praga". At the end of a long journey, the ship vanishes and even the memory of it disappears. Guccini's latest work leaves a mark, and it is his best album in many years: the title track, with its Arabian flair, works wonderfully, as does the fourth song, "Di notte" (definitive, commanding). The bitter sweetness of "L'ultima volta" portrays an existentialist and fatalist artist like no other in Italy, but what surprises most is the vaguely Fellini-esque excursus of "Gli artisti." She poses on the cover with her baby bump and, undeterred, continues to blend (a lot of) pop and (a little) rock, just as she has accustomed her audience to for years now. The strings in "Ti voglio bene" are the sign of an artist who is always too similar to herself but (and this must be acknowledged) tremendously consistent. As usual, her faithful Isabella Santacroce collaborates. "Ogni tanto" is even co-written by Pacifico: what a fine crowd.

12 jul 18:22
Released posthumously, Gaber's last work (a hoarse, aged, suffering voice) seems like an artistic and spiritual legacy, almost a testament. The closing track "Se ci fosse un uomo" is the final possible hope: a new civilization that replaces our inevitably sick world. The hope, however, is also found in "Non insegnate ai bambini," plus some past songs reinterpreted in a modern key. Irony is guaranteed ("Il corrotto"), but the tone is, ça va sans dire, funereal. possibile:

4 jul 10:45
I love rock, but metal, well... That said, Lacuna Coil are hard rock, not metal (as some jokers dared to call them, no). This, and the previous "Comalies" (which opened the doors to American success for them, a feat achieved in Italy only by them, PFM, and Maneskin) are two solid albums. "Karmacode" is powerful and well played, with the downside that after a while all the songs start to sound the same (but tracks like "What I see", "Closer" or the big single "Our truth" are, I'd say, essential) with the final gem "Enjoy the silence," a cover that leaves a mark. But, it's better that they sing in English, the only Italian track, "Without fear," is a bit weak. A work designed for the American market, and it sold like crazy. To the detriment of those who wish them harm (and there are many, unfortunately).

As a debut, nothing to object to; if only he had always continued like this. In an Italian musical landscape that at the end of the '80s seemed to have little to say, Ligabue burst in with his guitars, his riffs, and a healthy desire for rock that blends the Springsteen-like world of the great American prairies with the moody and foggy atmosphere of the Bassa Padana. "Angelo della nebbia"; "Balliamo sul mondo"; "Bar Mario"; "Piccola stella senza cielo" are the calling cards that captivate millions of young Italian rockers. It will prove to be a flash in the pan, a pity.

Surprisingly, he changes style and sound: the Springsteen-like rock of his beginnings gives way to a more syncopated hard rock, but one that is much less effective and convincing. Only "Ho messo via" goes down in history—a languid and (all too) crowd-pleasing ballad. The rest is negligible.

The masterpiece of Litfiba? Maybe. Certainly one of the most beautiful, before the very pop and less rock turn post-1993. A lot of great stuff ("Re del silenzio"; "Pierrot e la luna"), some things leave you speechless ("Apapaia"; "Gira nel mio cerchio"), but it’s a bit too long and a couple of tracks seem too minor compared to the rest ("Come un Dio"; "Ballata"). Having shed their skin as a hard and pure emerging rock band, Litfiba transform (to the great dismay of their early fans) into a top-chart group champions of a rock closer to pop. Scandal: come on, it’s just the natural evolution of a band that understood that the ’90s can no longer be musically treated like the ’80s. "Firenze sogna"; "Soldi"; "Dimmi il nome"; "Maudit" echo on all the radios. A beautiful album, a product of its time and of a restless generation that Carboni outlined with refinement and good pop taste.
