Blur: Blur

My favorite from the band (I don't consider Song 2 at all) is definitely one of the best albums of '97, recommended for those who want to start listening to them.

Masterpiece. If I were asked what my favorite Blur song is, I would also answer this, but with difficulty, because there are at least four others that are right there (essentially all of their output from '93 to '99 I would label as "my favorite by Blur"). p.s. that great piece "Song 2" included, of course. The new "The Magic Whip" is also fantastic, among my albums of 2015.

Without counting the wonderful B-sides they produced (there must be around a hundred) for which a separate discussion would be needed (in the '90s, in just 8 years, they achieved the impossible).

Of course, all the 90s albums by Blur are at a very high level, just like this one. Song 2 makes it all even better, obviously.
    Magic Whip is great.
Anyway, there are certain B-sides by Blur that really hit hard.

They have combined American and English styles on this album, as if it were a new debut, a debut that will become even more concrete with 13.

For me, it's the best of Blur... I see it as a real turning point; I prefer what comes after it to what they produced before, but that's just a personal inclination towards certain sounds and atmospheres, which from here on become more skewed, rarefied, and mature, without taking anything away from their earlier work, of course... great band nonetheless. This was recorded in Iceland if I'm not mistaken.
  • madcat
    10 oct 15
Yes the last, I think the influence of Iceland has been important for certain atmospheres that can be felt on this record, a bit like the importance of Morocco for "Think Tank" and Hong Kong for "The Magic Whip."

Think Tank another splendid album...even if Coxon was already elsewhere.
  • madcat
    10 oct 15
True, with Think Tank they managed to pull off a great album even when they momentarily (thankfully) lost a cornerstone like Coxon (who is present in the concluding "Battery in your leg" and in a few other tracks from that period, such as the b-side "Morricone"). As a Coxon fan, I had no great expectations when the album came out, and I was quite frustrated by the absence of Coxon (whose solo albums I had been following since 2000), but in the end it surprised me a lot, especially due to yet another radical change in sound and style, which was really remarkable.

The last "A+E" I'd say could be a nice punch to start with him: a crazy, wild mix of noise, post-punk, psychedelia, new wave, alternative, experimentation.

    Wake Up Bread
I sneak into my own Bakery
    It's four in the morning
I had too much to eat
Said I was out with the boys
    I creep into my kitchen
    I slip in the flour,
I know if I wake it,
    I'll wake up bread
I wonder, will it find out,
    About the other, other loaf.
    Doughnut.

    Wake up bread, you rise
    Wake up bread, and baked.
    Wake up bread, you rise
    Wake up bread.

Top 3 in the best Italian albums of all time
One of the most beautiful Italian live performances I've ever listened to, along with vol. 2.

Great Ale, this is truly a nice album. Between the two volumes, I prefer the present one, but the second one is also an outstanding product!

For me, the greatest Italian live album of all time, period. And I'm talking about both volumes; I can't regard them as two separate discs: I see it as a true double live album whose two parts are inseparable from one another. In fact, I'm used to listening to them both in one go. :)
  • Dragonstar
    16 sep 15
Well, you’re right, zimmy. I consider them live "separate" only because they were released as independent volumes. But it’s the same concert, right?
  • Zimmy
    16 sep 15
It’s not a single concert; it’s a summary of the tour. The songs were recorded on different dates (the cover lists all the dates when the recordings took place), but the two volumes together cover the setlist of a concert. The first volume is perhaps better because it was originally intended to be a single album (there's no "vol.1" written on the cover), so they chose to include the best tracks. The second was released a year later and is even shorter because it contains all the remaining songs.
  • Zimmy

Anyway, yes, it's the same tour and the same dates for both albums :)

Thank you, zimmy. The fact is that many years ago I had the recorded cassettes, so I couldn't know. And when I bought them on CD by taking advantage of the releases from a well-known magazine, there was no date listed because it only had the front cover and the back cover without the booklet. It may be shocking, but I thought it was the same concert. I’ll try to study more, but regarding Faber in the studio, feel free to ask whatever you want, especially since it’s a strictly original collection :)

    17 sep 15
Imagine, Dragon :) Back then, most live albums were actually made this way, meaning they recorded songs from different dates of the same tour; it was rare for them to record and release a single concert on an album. Anyway, in the original edition of both volumes, the recording dates (the same for both) are listed not in the booklet but right on the cover, below the title: you can see it clearly in the image on the DeBaser page. Perhaps in your newsstand edition the covers are different from the originals...

...but wait: are we sure we're talking about the same thing? Because here the title is ambiguous! :D Seeing the cover shown above, I'm obviously referring to "Fabrizio De André in concert - Arrangements PFM" from 1979/80, but I realize that the same title here could also refer to the two volumes of "Fabrizio De André in concert" released respectively in 1999 and 2001, which are indeed referring - those for sure! - to a single concert, namely the one at the Brancaccio in Rome, of which there is also a video version. Obviously, we are talking about two completely different records and concerts. I hope that, with this clarification, we are both on the same page :D
  • nes
    17 sep 15
The one from '99 doesn’t even have the arrangements of PFM, it doesn't even have the PFM moniker on the cover, so I think you’re getting it. I absolutely love the first disc from the double album of the Crueza de Ma tour. Oh my God, I love them all. If a record with Faber’s burps and farts were to come out, I think I would snap it up on the day of release in a limited edition. Then I’d probably complain about it, but I don’t think I’d be able to resist anything produced by the Genoese artist.
Do you like people who have beautiful music paired with intelligent, beautiful, honest lyrics and who master words like Maradona mastered the ball? Listen to Rancore & Dj Myke. Just do it, pure of spirit, because if we wait for young rappers to "breakthrough," we’ll be here all night.
Remixing Faber, stirring the wrath of the De André foundation that takes the video down from YouTube, letting them know it wasn’t meant as a violation of copyright but as a tribute, and politely asking them to at least give it a listen. The foundation apologizing.
I repeat: do yourselves a favor and discover them. That is, unless you already know them...
P.S.: I hope it’s unnecessary to say that until the day before hearing the track, if someone had told me that someone else was remixing De André, I would have gone off like a firecracker, a pig, and a punch. And I also hope it’s obvious that if I weren't sure about what I’m saying, I wouldn’t dare mention any other musician when talking about De André.

Hi nes, I know very well that the one from '99 doesn't have either the PFM or this cover, but I don't know, maybe someone reads the title without looking at the cover... just for clarity. :)
So, I went to watch the video of these artists you mentioned, and even though it's definitely not my genre, I was really struck by both the skill, the taste, and the respect shown in the tribute to Faber, and (especially) because the lyrics of the piece are truly very, very beautiful. A really pleasant discovery for me :)
That said, it really saddens me that the De André Foundation opposed such a product, primarily because it has absolutely nothing against Faber, but rather it's a wise, intelligent, and beautifully done tribute; and also because I believe no artist should be untouchable, not even someone immense like Fabrizio... who, while alive, did not appreciate being "beatified" in a certain way, just think about when during concerts he complained that his lyrics were included in school anthologies. So, welcome to those who pay homage, remix, or reinterpret Faber, even poorly, because it means that in some way there’s someone who cares to remember him. Making him untouchable only harms his memory because, as De Gregori sang in a beautiful song about Luigi Tenco, "some still remember him while lighting a cigarette, others made him a monument to forget him a little faster"...

The foundation will have read "don raffaè" and thought: "nobody told us anything." They will have seen two scratched plates and instinctively activated the censorship (because Fabrizio is religion and we don’t blaspheme). Honestly: I fully share the foundation's thoughts. I had a friend who played metal in the late 90s and he confided in me that he wanted to cover the Batman theme by Cristina D'Avena and also Marinella's song. I begged him to forget about De André back then, and I would implore him to do the same now.

I discovered Rancore and DJ Myke more or less by accident and fell in love with them right away (and rap is pretty far from my "favorite" genres). The day they uploaded the video, I was terrified. Terrified in an unconditional and general way. "What the hell are you thinking, you seemed like two pretty thick-headed brains, why?" Then I heard it, and even my greatest certainties began to waver, and I realized that my love was justified and sacred. Now they’ve released an EP, and it’s no longer love: it’s faith. With a strong urge for proselytism like Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Ah, and my friend never even did that Batman cover, unfortunately; I heard a snippet one day in the rehearsal room and it was amazing.

As for the rest: De André in my mind would survive a stroke and senile dementia. I believe so. If things were to go differently, feel free to take me down, thanks.

And shoot me tracks à gogo from the two phenomena mentioned above. Here, I'll leave you with two of the pieces that made my knees tremble as soon as I heard them:

Damn, Zimmy, it’s true that there are the dates! Sorry for the confusion, but I really didn’t remember! It’s been a long time since I last handled them, because when I rummage around in the Faber section, I usually just grab the studio albums. To be honest, I only have these two Live albums with Faber, and... I won’t tell you the other one because I plan to write a review of it sooner or later, since it’s an album that has never been reviewed around here!
  • Alemisso

  • Zimmy
    17 sep 15
Don’t worry, Dragon, it’s all good! Just think that Faber+PFM vol. 1 and 2 is my absolute favorite De André after "Creuza de Ma." I find it as important as the studio albums because it marks a kind of watershed between the Faber of the 60s-70s, where the lyrics dominate the music, and the later Faber who focuses much more on the musical aspect. The doubt I had arose from the fact that Fabrizio, or whoever was in charge, never had much imagination when it came to giving titles to live albums, so it’s easy to get confused :D
I’ll be curious to read your review when you decide to publish it :)
  • Dragonstar
    17 sep 15
Thanks to both of you then, I’ll do my best. You’re right when you say that this live show is a bridge between the two main recording phases of Fabrizio. In fact, the rearranged old songs are very powerful and interesting, to the point that it becomes really difficult to decide which version is the best. Personally, I have to say, I feel very attached to the bare acoustic tradition of singer-songwriter music, so for example, I will always prefer "Il pescatore" in its original version, as opposed to "La guerra di Piero" which I prefer in this context. Anyway, those are just details, what’s certain is that no one can take those five stars away from him! :)

Perfect if it had been a standalone album and not just a simple collection of singles, b-sides, and rarities, let's say a nice follow-up to Bleach, if it had been released in '90. It has much more punk and pop sounds that approach the style of Nevermind. Really not bad, from Dive and Sliver to the beautiful covers "Turnaround," "Son of A Gun," and the crazy finale "Aneurysm," really great tracks.

Montage of Heck I decided, in the end, not to watch it, partly for the same reason I didn’t buy the diaries; I don’t think it’s right to take such an invasive approach into the private life of an artist who is no longer here, just to further feed the myth and make a ton of money from it, because in the end that’s what it is.
