Yes, there are many missing like Squirrel Bait, Red Temple Spirits, Husker Du that I'm listening to right now. Let's say that a lot of bands are missing because they are a bit on the edge of my tastes. It takes me a while to get used to certain sounds.

keep insisting! ;D anyway, like the guns are less extreme, otherwise also jane's addiction, soft boys, and cramps

Yes, I insist. In fact, I've decided to revisit bands and sounds that I had left behind and that hadn’t driven me crazy upon first listen.

Okkappa ranking. I second the advice from jdv, especially rotten folks like Gun Club and Cramps but also Faith No More and Big Black by Albini. Husker Du, Black Flag, and Minor Threat are exceptional but like you, I also struggled quite a bit to connect with them. After a while, you get there ;)

Thank you! Anyway, there are so many great people missing, but the '80s are the decade I know the least about and I'm only now getting closer to certain sounds.

Aside from the fact that you need to listen to "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus (and while you're at it, check out the albums that followed Flat Field just to see how they affect you), I’d say you’re ready for Husker Du :)

I'm listening to Mask right now. Good album, but In the Flar Field is definitely superior.

      18 oct 12
Yes, undoubtedly. My favorite after In the Flat is the latest "Burning From the Inside" from 1983, even though Murphy was only semi-active.

I will definitely listen to it.
    • hjhhjij
      18 oct 12
But have you heard "Bela Lugosi's Dead"? No, because that one is essential, it's on its own superior to everything in In the Flat Field :)

      Yes, yes, great piece!

Here, after listening to that piece, I realized that Bauhaus are neither Dark-wave nor Gothic, nor Dark-glam. They are Horror, period :)

First two places are wonderful... however, for third place I would put Tom with his Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years.

I'm literally devouring Frank's Wild Years these days. I stumbled upon it again, and for the last 5 days I’ve hardly listened to anything else. It's an amazing album/theatrical show.

If they were in order of preference, I would put Waits above Springsteen, I’d say :)

In the first place, there would have been Sonic Youth, and then definitely Tommasone second.

Now I'm gonna listen to it again, Frank, damn it.

By the way, does no one care about "Big Time"? Spectacular live show, complete with a concert-documentary film showcasing what a damn stage animal Tommaso is.

...the Gun Club are great too...I would also add the Cramps...Nick Cave a bit short...great ranking...

Wow, so there is decent stuff from the eighties too.

I'm replying to you late, pana. Forget decent; there’s a ton of beautiful stuff, like beautiful-beautiful-beautiful-beaut iful-beautiful-beautiful... you know what I mean :)
    • Mr. Money87
      30 oct 12
Yes, there are indeed a lot of beautiful things. I don't know the '80s very well, so don't rely too much on this ranking which is still a work in progress.

      30 oct 12
For someone who needs to start exploring the decade, this ranking works perfectly ;) I mean, they could start by listening to bands like Bauhaus and The Cure, or even The Gun Club. Anyway, I still need to delve into the '80s, but Money... isn't it time for Husker Du? :)
    • Mr. Money87
      30 oct 12
Yes, you are right. I listened to them but didn't delve deeper; I was doing that, but then I started listening to The Smiths and the Vurgin Prunes and set them aside. I'll listen to them soon.
    • hjhhjij
      30 oct 12
Well, well :) And I'll get the Prunes, which I miss.

By the way, regarding the Smiths, "The Queen Is Dead" is a great album. From the '80s, I also love Tom Waits (of course) and Remain in Light. I’ve sampled the SY and they don’t seem bad; I’ll dive deeper.
    • hjhhjij

You can delve into everything you find here, there's only good stuff :)

I also really like Van Morrison and Peter Gabriel, and (a little less) the Cure, Dire Straits, and Marillion.
    • hjhhjij
      31 oct 12
Well, the Cure are amazing, come on, at least in the '80s. Morrison released some great albums in the '80s.

I added My Bloody Valentine that I had forgotten.

    • hjhhjij

Oh, but you know that since Loveless is from 1991 and it's one of the top albums of the decade, sometimes I forget that in the '90s they only released that and Tremolo and that they're mainly an '80s band? :D Moreover, they released a ton of cool EPs in the '80s (besides Isn't Anything).
