The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982 by Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce. Active until 1987, they became influential in indie/alternative music for their melodic guitar work and literate lyrics.

Known for Johnny Marr's jangly guitar, Morrissey's literate and melancholic lyrics and distinctive voice, and for influential singles and compilations (Hatful of Hollow, Louder Than Bombs, The World Won't Listen).
