The Jesus and Mary Chain

Musical Group

Scottish alternative rock band formed by brothers Jim and William Reid, noted for combining sweet, sixties-tinged melodies with heavy guitar feedback; seminal albums include Psychocandy (1985) and Darklands (1987).

Formed in East Kilbride, Scotland in the early 1980s by brothers Jim and William Reid. Early line-ups included Douglas Hart and Bobby Gillespie (who later fronted Primal Scream). Psychocandy (1985) is widely cited as influential on shoegaze and noise-pop. The band recorded through the 1980s and 1990s, split in 1999, and reformed in 2007; Damage and Joy (2017) is their first studio album after the reunion.

DeBaser reviews emphasize the band's defining mix of sweet melodies and heavy feedback. Psychocandy and Darklands are repeatedly highlighted as landmark works. Later albums get mixed but overall respect the group's melodic strength and legacy.
