You forgot one of the most "stoner" bassists ever: Mel Schacher (devastating).

the great Entwistle is John not Jim:))) Can I suggest a few other great rock bassists for this nice ranking? Geddy Lee (Rush), Chris Squire (Yes), Les Claypool (Primus), Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone), Greg Lake (ELP), Tony Levin (King Crimson), Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs), James Jamerson (Funk Brothers), Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson), John Wetton (King Crimson), Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy), Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire). Bye!

I believe that Les Claypool, Larry Graham, and Lynott deserve a place in this ranking.

Thank you Fede: I would have included Grand Funk, but who knows when; Emerson: John became Jim because of the third; Postin: thanks!

If I may give you a piece of advice, I wouldn't underestimate Mike Rutherford of Genesis, who is incredible on albums like "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and "A Trick of the Tail".

Oh no, I forgot! And now I have to find the right place for it, not easy!!! :)

  • Great quotes. Allow me to also suggest a name that seems to escape all bassist rankings: GEEZER BUTLER. A fundamental bassist for all of Rock.

for Brand X: I know some live tracks like True To The Click where Jones shines from start to finish, then... Black Moon and I might be mistaken but Nuclear Burn. I can't remember anything else :)

    You all have a soft spot for bassists, but here, among you, who plays the bass? It's an instrument for "the few," you know what I mean: if you're not really good, you'll never stand out;

  • hjhhjij
    26 jan 11
I don't play it, but I really like it. Nuclear Burn is one of the standout tracks from the first album, from '76, with Phil Collins on drums. (what a rhythm base!)

I believe both make music that's too heavy for your tastes, but here's a slightly softer song by Living Colour, where the bass is definitely noticeable.

Yes, Lemmy from Motörhead, of course. I don't think it's exactly metal; it's more like extremely hard and angry rock 'n' roll. Give it a listen; if you're a bassist, you'll notice he has an outstanding right hand, rhythmically unmatched.

  • Geo@Geo
    26 jan 11
for magnum: I like the bass as an instrument and bassists by logic, but at most I would be "a" bassist; nice to meet you, magnum;D

The legendary Gianni Maroccolo cannot be missed among the Italians. Rankings aside, Iside, have you seen what they’ve done to our coast?

Regarding Noel Redding, I think he’s a bit too high up (it’s your ranking, of course, it’s not a criticism of you or your tastes, etc.). He was Hendrix’s bassist, that’s true, but the two standout members of the Experience were Jimi (obviously) and Mitch. Noel was an average bassist; in fact, he wasn’t even originally a bassist. Jimi chose him just because he liked his hairstyle, but he often wasn’t happy with him; in fact, sometimes in the studio, Hendrix himself played the bass parts. In short, I’m not saying he was bad, but he wasn't among the best either. In my opinion, of course.

  • Geo@Geo
    27 jan 11
Magnum, you're right, the position is more linked to Jimi than to Redding: I had decided to change the ranking, but only after including the Italians :) Kor: Maroccolo definitely needs to be included; - and for the beaches: Non ci Resta che Piangere :( It's nice to see the interest, especially when your favorites aren't there ;) DDD

I see you've included Saturnino... good job. What do you think about Fioravanti? The coasts... they're from Sulcis, I'm not going that far north -))

  • Geo@Geo
    27 jan 11
Oh Isis, Saturnino was already there, but you didn’t "notice"; for the coasts, I was answering Korrea in your place;)) "Unfortunately," madness is contagious. Sorry, but I don’t know Wobble!

  • Geo@Geo

Whatever, I'm really just outside "in superattico";-DD. I don't know any other foreigners, but they don't seem to be that few to me. As for the Italians, I'm convinced that I'm missing someone.

Jah Wobble played in the early albums of Public Image Limited, and then went solo. From the Pil, listen to Death Disco, Public Image, and Poptones on YouTube (I don't know how to put links directly) and see if you like it, bye.

Les Claypool Metallica? Aren't you confusing him with Cliff Burton, who definitely deserves a spot in the rankings? Les only did an audition with Metallica and a song on Garage Inc., where I believe he plays the banjo or something similar...

Hi Geo, wow what a beautiful and rich ranking... all my favorites are there!
In rock, I like – although they aren't particularly virtuosic – Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith), Adam Clayton (U2), John Illsley (Dire Straits), Mike Inez (Alice in Chains): punctual and functional.
Stepping outside the strictly rock domain, I'd also include Stanley Clarke and Darryl Jones (Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Stones) and, in funk, the GREAT James Jamerson and Bernie Edwards (Chic and a thousand others)!
Oh, I’d also add Doug Wimbish of Living Colour.
But in my heart, my teenage loves Sting, Wyman, and Flea will always prevail (do you remember the Male???)
    Good night!

Hi davang, what a pleasure to hear from you again: you’re right, readers always feel like someone is missing :D. The problem is that numbers can be unforgiving; sometimes you don’t know where to place the artists. But at least your three favorites are definitely there :) In the 2010 ranking, the one on the homepage, you’re always within the top 50 ;)) Best regards: I’m always following you, even though I’m visiting MySpace a bit less due to time constraints!
