Difficile definire "pop". Per me è musica di ampio respiro rivolta alle masse, ma non per questo necessariamente banale e stupida.

Beach Boys no, right? Brian Wilson, the most influential pop bassist, is the source of the lines from Demi Roussos (who is missing from the ranking), those from Paul McCartney, those from Chris Hillman (who is also missing); even Mr. David Gilmour cites him as an influence. It's impossible to overlook him.

What you say is right, but personally I don't really love the Beach Boys or Demis Roussos. My rankings are short because I couldn't include all the most deserving, so I limit myself to mentioning my favorites even though sometimes I inevitably do "injustice" to bigger artists. I prefer to face some criticism rather than write 100 names and mention those I've never really cared for.

Beautiful (even though I consider some of the greatest in this ranking, like Kraftwerk, Bowie, and Kate Bush, anything but simply pop, even though I understand your conception of pop). Anyway, besides the Beach Boys, I would also include Tears for Fears and early Elton John.
