Electric Light Orchestra

Musical Group

Formed in 1970 by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) became known for blending rock and pop with orchestral strings. Jeff Lynne emerged as the group's leader and chief songwriter, steering the band from early progressive experiments toward polished, melodic pop in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Co-founded by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood in 1970; early line-ups included violin and cello players; Jeff Lynne is the principal composer and producer; the band moved from progressive/symphonic experiments to late-70s pop (Discovery, Out of the Blue); Mik Kaminski is noted as an early violin collaborator; Jeff Lynne later worked with George Harrison (Cloud Nine) and as a member of the Travelling Wilburys (mentioned in reviews).

DeBaser reviews emphasise ELO's blend of orchestral strings and pop/rock, Jeff Lynne's central role, and the band's shift from early progressive experiments to polished late-70s/80s pop. Key albums frequently discussed are Eldorado, Discovery, Out of the Blue and Face the Music. Reviewers are admiring and often nostalgic about the band's melodies and arrangements.

For:Fans of orchestral pop, symphonic rock, Beatles-influenced classic rock listeners

If we want to exaggerate, we can say that the successful and rich career of the Electric Light Orchestra, spanning the seventies and eighties, was almost entirely based on the insights refined by John Lennon and Beatles producer George Martin in a couple of their masterpieces, "I Am the Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever": pop music distinctly symphonized by string instruments.

A masterpiece in its genre, which I keep at home and in the car as you would a box of aspirin for a potential headache.

Jeff Lynne, writer of music, lyrics, arrangements—basically anything you hear coming out of the speakers, is owed (and how much!) by the pundits and rock critics: he is a musical genius only rarely acknowledged (listen to his brilliant and unmistakable work in George Harrison's "Cloud Nine" or in the Travelling Wilburys project) and to whom the rock world (and its audience) should have given much more.

E.L.O. certainly reached its commercial and popular peak with this album which remains a cornerstone of its genre without belonging to any specific genre and especially without a true geographical cultural identity, as it seems to have an American sound approach to totally European lyrics and inspirations.
